Please educate me regarding this issue.

If there is a dropped unregistered domain having a decent pr.
This pr being non confirmed (orange), rather than fake (red) according to www.digpagerank.com

Can such a domain survive pr for the next pr update?

    if Not
Are there any specific ways to keep the pr value decently close to original pr?

    Regards
    Parab

You've no control over it really. PR come from the backlinks so as long as those backlinks remain, PR should remain. But some webmasters might remove backlinks when they find the site content has changed or that reciprocal links are gone.

If you put the same content on it and the backlinks stay the same it should maintain PR. If anything changes the PR could be adjusted up or down to compensate for the changes.

In theory the PR should remain, the odds against a webmaster actually checking the status of the links, although they know they should do, is in your favour if you're looking to purchase a domain with PR. It is to be expected that some back-links will be dropped, but all-in-all, the PR should hold its colour.

Check the pages of the site with archive.org

Get the names for the pages, throw up blank with the same name, install the google toobar and navigate your way thru the site and see what pages have the high/decent pr.
Replicate the content on those pages as best as (without violating copyright) - or even if you are in a position to contact the previous owner and ask permission or make $$ offer for the now dropped into oblivion content -
various options at your disposal -
but getting the high pr pages found is the primary one, then take care of them one way or t'other!

Let me go ahead and put my 2 cents in on this since I asjked this question a long time ago on another site.

Can a PR domation survive a drop?

Yes it can. Although its not going to be often. As long as the site retains its bacclinks then yes it can. The problem is that when a website dies, most webmaters who like to keep there site up to date would remove the link. Think about it yourself, if you have a link on your website but the website was droppped a over a month ago, would you still have a link to it? Proably not. This is why the chances are so unlikely. But on websites that have pages from almost a year ago, few people will go and change those pages so the link could still possibly be there. This is usually how the domain retains the PR.

I know people are going to say content matters but honestly through my testing it hasn't. I made bought 2 domains and just put up a blank html page. But for when I was going to use it I went ahead and got some links out there for it. On the last PR update they went to PR3 and PR4. Remember blank page so there's no content. So with no content and enough links you can get any domain to atleast a PR3.

Before buying a domain for PR, check the type of backlinks it has

How many bacllinks and how much PR does it take on those link to achieve PR on a blank page. ( trying to do the math financially.)

Just an FYI, our office did a test. They built 2 unique sites on the same topic (different unique content sites), on 2 different domains. 1 was brand new, and 1 was dropped PR5 domain, with 120+ domains. We just did basic 200+ directory submissions for both domains. After 6 months, the site with new domain resulted much better in search engine rankings, always improving with time, but the expired domain we could not rank it for atleast the 1st 1 year.

Mostly it would not survive and fall to ZERO.
But sometime it drops in number but not fall to ZERO.

PR? IT doesn't take much. Even a link with a PR1 or PR2 will help. As far as the number of bacclinks it depends how you want to count it, it doesn't take much. One person told me 1 link from a PR3 page could get you a PR3 on the next update. Normally I would disagree becuase doesn't that sound just way too easy to do. But through the domains I tested, yes it can be that easy. Let me assure you, getting a PR3 takes so little work its not even funny. Put remember PR doesn't guarantee SERP.

As far as what Honey said, I'm very incline to agree. But it depends on the domain and the anchor words too. I recently bought 2 domains. One was dropped before the other was frseh and never used. Guess which one is listed first on SERPs, yes the fresh domain. Both domains points to the same site. So I can agree with Honey from experience but that's with SERPs, I will have to wait til the next PR update to confirm that part.
