Why do people keep submitting wrong sites to my directory?

    Hi

I have a fishing directory which accepts only fishing / fishing related links - ourfishingdirectory.com

It is pretty obvious that this is or only fishing & fishing related links however I still get about 3 submissions a day from completely unrelated topics, I had someone trying to submit porn the other day also.

This is getting really annoying man! How can I stop this?

Yes, it is Obvious for me as well if you see the site name and the categories.
Maybe you can add a line of text on the submit page that you only accept fishing / fishing related links.

But even then I am afraid that people still submit wrong links.

Login to administration of directory: system > ban control > then fill in every word you don't want to let sumbitters use to submit their website to your directory. Problem solved!

And/Or change the submission status from free to paid.

    Good luck

I have an art directory and suffer with the same issue of people submitting anything they can think of. Banning words does limit the problem although I've had people writing descriptions that are suitable for the directory while the site isn't.
Doesn't always work, I've had paid submissions for irrelevant sites, their response to being rejected is generally that they don't care about the subject they just want the PR :(

    1. I guess submitters just want to go to the higher categories.
    2. Most just don't want searching for the right one.

dont think you will ever stop it.

even with a captcha and paid you will still get pr hunters.

i just started a finance directory to test out a few things

    filing-bankrupt.co.uk

from what you are saying, I am going to have the same problem.
when i first looked at this a few weeks ago I thought it would be a good way of stopping the rubbish but after some heavy reading this last week or so it seems that I will be in for some 'boneheads' posting allsorts

is it any wonder why SEO and linking gets a bad name

I have just again declined 3 links from supercorps.com - and different categories of theirs - all non fishing related.

The problem if I ban certain words is that they may be duplicated by a link that I want there.

I suppose i will just have to keep on deleting links....

Ban their email address and ban any domains they submit, that will stop them repeating the submission.

In fact, many submitters do not follow the submission guide of the directory.

Don't worry about it, I think Dmoz got millions of submission like that. ;)

Simply because people are desperate to get links to their site.

Little do they know they are just wasting their own time!

Obviously they have nothing better to do than submit where not relevant and realll concentrate on building their website.

what do you have in mind about soon - many webmasters submit from other parts of the world where they cannot read or, can just about write enough english to place a submission!

Alternatively you can write strong rejection rules for those who can read. If you can write a script that they have to read and accept before submission they may help.

As long as you offer a free listing, you will get many spammers. IP ban or word filter would do some job for you though.

Yet if people stopped and thought about what they were doing they'd probably get more quality links for their sites. Directory editors would waste less time with rubbish and so real submissions would be approved quicker, thus making the web master happier.
