A beginners Guide: Posting at directory owners Forum I wanted to share my own thoughts on how to make the most at DP directory owners forum or any other directory forum. I see new members (=New in this business) all the time and I hope they can use a few tips to help them have a positive experience with us. So I have noticed some unofficial stats for this forum: A. At any time there are approximately 65-100 members using this forum. B. There are many TOP quality directory owners. You will learn from the pro’s directly. C. We offer informative advice on how to improve the directory business and many many tips that will help you save money and time. D. And my favorite= The benefit of becoming a trusted directory owner, which will get you new submissions to your directory. 1. What would you think about a member with 1-10 posts? Right. I know, you will have to prove that you’re not the next “QBC†member. 2. Try to post at the beginning of a new thread or be the first on the second page (post #21). Readers most likely will notice you at this hot spots. 3. Make it a point to post at “very popular threadsâ€, you’ll know which one I’m talking about. These threads are visited by almost all members. There are other benefits such as pr and non related visitors that find the thread interesting. 4. Keep the thread on topic. If you wish to talk about something else, it is more productive to start your own. If all could agree on this, I bet this forum would be more interesting. 5. Write useful comments, not two or three words just to increase your post count. 6. Be respectful of others. People will appreciate the respect you give them and will respect you in return. So many times member will insult each other to the point that some are banned or leave on their own. I will name member as an example: Britishguy owner of Forplex (a very popular and quality directory). Since I know about him, I find that most his post are positive and careful written to avoid any misunderstanding. I’m pretty sure you will find that he is well respected among directory owners. My respect for him! Why is this point so important? Some members are so knowledgeable in this area and not having them in this forum certainly affects all of us. 7. Unless you have a good reason to pm a some one, please don’t do it. Asking for favors such as writing a positive comments for you is not going to help much. You will be banned for sending this useless pms. 8. Be helpful. You don’t have to be an expert to help someone. Many members will give you a positive comments for just helping them. This is something that I really like about this forum, so many ways that we help each other (It is Amazing!!!) 9. Write articles/Your list of ???/Or anything of important to our community. I have learned a lot reading this information. 10. Do you know what is the best time to post something important? It is something you need to think about before starting a new thread. Sometimes it will help you create the biggest thread. So, make sure you’re available to answer questions in timely manner. 11. Use the Search Button. Do I have tell you why? So please have fun with it. 12. Using public forums is an art. If you use it correctly, it will give you an advantage and get you in the “trusted Category†in short period of time. Not to mention the many new friends you will make right here. So let’s make this forum the perfect home for the new Generation of DIRECTORIES. Sorry for not writing a book, but so far this is all I have. I will be updating this article with more tips. I know there a lot of things I did not talk about, so feel free to mention them here and I will add them to my list. .
Very well thought out and compiled OP with a very focused emphasis on solid guidelines to ensure that both OP and posts are always helpful and informative Thanks for the kind words, I just try and post on a balanced basis and if possible try to post with positive friendly input and comments
Great post. I especially agree with number 6, not just for acting on forums, but for acting in real life too. Showing respect is something that creates picture about you not others. Even if someone is acting disrespectful you should continue to act polite and keep your level.
A very good post indeed but if its targetted at someone who may not read this to get the advice, is it not in danger of being wasted? With all respect nobody has to prove that their not the next QBC, a beginner on this forum does not mean that they know little about running directories, we too can learn from a beginner, ive seen many individuals here with very small post numbers giving 10 times contribution as opposed to someone who appears like posting on the forum is their full time job. Self glorification in the directory world can stunt growth, were not here to dictate but rather to advise if we can, it is not an institution but rather a place to share information and experience. One big mistake by established forum users is to underestimate another, if more people approach a person who appears new to running directories then maybe it will be better not to patronise them so much and step down of the virtual stools and genuinely work together as opposed to setting rules for people who frankly dont need or want to follow if they choose. You cant mould a scammer into a saint, much like you wont succeed in forcing a person with no manners on a forum to suddenly become straght and polite.
A well surmise post indeed. I really agree with your #6. If you want to leave a good impression, you should certainly give due respect to others even if you don’t agree with them on certain points. And yes an important #5 as well. Post should always be taken as a way to contribute to the community. Not just for the sake of post count. Greens for you
Nice post. Thanks! Very good example about Britishguy. I know personally he has been very helpful to me...and I see Balkanboy posted just under him who has also been incredibly helpful to me. Others too (I can't list them all). Thanks!
A gr8 Post indeed, if all were to follow this, DP indeed would be a wonderful place to be by! However i do disagree with: Not all people are QBC's, and assuming such is Evil in itself! Proving you are a good businessman, and you are in the running for being the next Aviva or Alive is more positive and more fruitful! And Also Pipes im a newbie, forgive me for citing this out, but reading past posts, i can boldly say "Smub" is the best example here! Every person, including me, when logs on to the net as a newbie(not just directories), tries to find ways to earn easy money, .... it is only when we get bumped by others does he really realise that the net is no diffrent than normal business! In the end its who bumps you, and how that person handles the situation, .... we do know Smub is one of the best designers here dont we! You can brand a person as QBC, and make a mockery out of him to teach him a lesson, or teach him something that makes him a better person. In both you will get satisfaction, but the Kind of satisfaction is diffrent! #2 I strongly support #6, some people on DP, no names, do have this problem, when i was a newbie here, i wrote a small article , Frustrated webmasters, although the mood in which i wrote it was totally diffrent. This is just my 2 cents, im still a newbie and still learning M.
My #1 point was to make the case that TRUST is very important and that when you're a new member in this business you want to present yourself serious about it. Would you do business a someone you don't know? Not many people would. The "QBC" word was just an example, please don't take it out context. I try to give the benefit of doubt to anybody to show who they really are. Sorry for not being more specific, but I hope you can read it from my point of you. Thanks for reading and writing your comments
#11 is the most ignored one. Search and you shall find! There are all kinds of good information here, but those who find can get the benefit
I second that any day! No offence, but we do do business with people accorss nations, buying links and services from people we dont know! I didnt mean to, im sorry of i did, But my point being dont assume all are bad, as its said "Don't judge a book by its cover", All people are good, its just when they realise what the net is, their real self comes out, and their quest for earning quick money dies! though i resent some still dont learn! M.
my rule is if you do not have any constructive thing to say, don't post (thats the reason why my post count is still low after 3 years).
June 2004 Anyway back to the topic, I thought #11 was pretty interesting. I think when I first got here I didn't search the boards much, but as the months passed by, I realized I began using it more and more. Thanks for the write-up.
