Google Competitor Gets $165million Kick Start

    Did you guys see this?

Theseus, a German based project that is aiming to develop “the world’s most advanced multimedia search engine for the next-generation Internet.” will received a cash injection of $165 million from the German Government, under approval by the EU.

I'm in no way suggesting this is a "Google killer", but $165 million is a lot of cash to back the right idea.

    Thoughts?

My guess is that is just the project website. They'll have to do a much better job to get any real traction in branding.

Guys, it is HIGHLY doubtful that this is the domain that will be used for the search engine.

    Think about it...

Exactly. They'll definitely leave some of that money to buy a good premium domain name.

It seems funny that Germany and France both feel the need for government involvement and support in order to compete against the growing presence that is Google. Maybe the US government should step in and help Yahoo, MSN or Ask.....:)

I have no doubt that eventually someone in Europe will surpass US based companies in domination of the Internet. They have done so economically already. Thats where LINUX came from too.

Hmmm... as much as I'd like to think you were right, I just can't get it to stick. Sorry, but I just don't see it happening.

The main reason is that this is government money. When has government done ANYTHING better than the private sector?

Google Killer has become such a cliche, even techcrunch is using it. It says Multimedia search..

Google is GREAT in normal search, but in multimedia and other vertical search, google is already pathetic. So those german guys won't have to kill the multimedia search business of Google afterall. It is not even alive. Look at google images, or froogle.. They should be killing like.com and not google.

In simple traditional keyword and phrases search, microsoft with all the billions is still far behind.... Good Luck theseus

I really doubt this. I mean, it's possible it may be a competitor in Europe, but I doubt it will be one in North America. Google has way more than 165 million dollars and many investors interested in thier continued dominance:)
