Most directories charge in dollars, but most of us are not from the USA. It's useful to be able to keep track of prices in your own currency without always having to do a mental conversion. I'm well aware that Paypal will do a currency conversion, but it's nice to know that more of what you pay will go to the directory owner for possible reinvestment, rather than being wasted in conversion fees. Please list any directories you run or know about which list payment in anything other than dollars, along with your current price ranges.
I use Canadian Dollars on my Legal Directory, Paypal does all the conversions for me and since this was a Canadian Focused Site I thought it would be more Canadian to offer payment in that currency. Featured links - 1-year term (regular price $99.99) $49.99 Regular links - 1-year term (regular price $59.99) $29.99 Regular links with reciprocal (regular price $29.99) $19.99
Kinda makes me want to move The american dollar isnt worth anything anymore... It would be nice if i could charge in pounds but dont think it would be appropriate, and i have yet to pay anyone in pounds so... thx malcolm
http://www.thefreewebsitedirectory.co.uk ~ Free to £3.99 http://www.thepremiumdirectory.co.uk ~ £1.99 - £14.99 also both of my bidding directories in my signature use GBP currency.
Why not? I mean, you have loads of directories, and UK buyers make up a fair % of the market. You could try converting one of your directories to charge in sterling, even if it's a general one. There's also the psychological effect of the low dollar-to-pound ratio: I find it easier to think of parting with £10 for something than $20, even though they are more or less the same amount right now.
I charge in Pound Sterling for the express paid option on both my directories. www.worldsiteindex.com £11.75 www.artweblinks.com £7.05
Im considering setting up a future directory and charging with £, il not tamper with my current ones, but id like to see what happens if i set one up with £, not a UK only directory either.
Mine are global if not US biased, all I did was to stick a currency converter on it to give the approximate $ value for those that want to know before starting the submission process and getting to PayPal.
tolra, thats a really good idea, making it easy for them to do a quick check before proceeding any further, cool.
i'd love to charge with Euros, because when i convert dollars to Euros i lose tons of money (125 dollars = only 89 euros..) but i cant.. eveyone want to deal with dollars..
I think switching to £'s would be a nice move for me, but I am a little bit nervous about loosing out on submissions.
I don't understand how you are losing if that's the current rate of exchange? Or is it the impression of losing since it's not 1/1 ratio?
Am losing because of the dollars losing dramatically its value in the last 3 years, a few years ago there was effectively a 1/1 Ratio...
FYI, phpLynx script allows you to configure the directory to accept multiple currencies and you can set your own conversion rates.
very interesting question. I suppose the reason why it was USD is cause directories were started there? Is it?? Cause everyone else will lose some due to the exchange rates and charges by PP. But actually, why not charge you your local currency? Not sure how PP works, but I suppose at least you will get the full amount in local currency minus charges by PP. But at least you don't have to suffer another loss due to the lousy exchange rate of PP.... Worth exploring.....
The site adjusts the price to charge based upon the currency chosen. That amount is then charged via the CC processor. Any conversion of funds from there to the final bank is handled by the processor and bank. Basically, it just allows the dir owner to do the math that the OP complained about doing in his head. If you set the conversion rate too high or low, you just charge a little bit different than from the base currency. But it is easier for submitters to know what they are paying because the price shown to them is the price they pay.
