If you are a web user who wants to find a selection of directories that have been filtered for quality then visit www.bestdirs.com

If you are a directory owner who wants more links, more visibility or better serps then visit www.bestdirs.com

Pollution  That's a bit strong, I'd see pop-up ads, child porn, spammers etc. as polluters.

One of the primary goals of my directory is to provide a place where folks can find out what's new in the Indie arts & discover new artists in all fields.

We do get visitors from other indie-related sites & I won't include a site if it isn't closely related to our topic & will provide a quality experience for visitors to that site.

    best,
    Denise

Well since it is coming from someone with obviously little online business experience and in a sort of juvenile way I don't think you really ruffled too many feathers.

I don't think it's true to say that search engines strive to index all of the net, they want to keep out spam as well. But directories, including general directories, tend to be more focused and it's often true that less is more.

Smart searchers are finding what they want on niche directories and larger general directories. Just because the search engines have the highest profile among the general public doesn't mean that directories can't provide something valuable for those people who have located a few good ones that serve their needs.

JoeAnt.com has over 1.000.000 visitors a month and I don't think they are all webmasters ;-)

    Hi Hbird64

Are you able to say more about JoeAnt ?

I know that you get traffic, thought it was a joke at first ,

You don't advertise, I'd never heard of JoeAnt before I started out seriously on the web business,

So how do you get the traffic

I suppose you are going to tell me that most of those are direct hits instead of search engine referrals...

Now joeant is what i would call a 'real directory'. Adds value to the web. But then sites like joeant dont come up in 'selected' lists or popularity contests like here: http://forums.digitalpoint.com/showthread.php?t=392312 . These guys are all for sleek design, page rank, show off and no of backlinks. Where is the quality mann?

Directories are just not for backlinks. Well, backlinks are a good thing ( a very very good thing )

Directories are a very very good source of information since our company uses directories to search for information.
