    Useful comments left on related blogs can get you traffic as well as pass some PR (if they are dofollow). I agree that they are a valid way for links and many blogs use the Top Commentator Plug-in to reward their commentators for their effort and feedback.

    My blog is a PR5 blog. I used to have a dofollow plugin installed that made all comment links followable.

    Someone created a list of several PR5 and PR6 blogs that were dofollow blogs, (my blog was included) and the spammers rejoiced! I received several comments everyday that were not related to the post they were posted under. They weren't the typical spam comments either.

    A lot of the comments were just those quick little "another great post" comments. It quickly became a pain in the butt to edit out those comments.

    I have since disabled the dofollow plugin, but I am thinking about adding the top commentator plugin. I wonder if the spam will show up again?

    Of course it will. The spammers target the obvious stuff like that and the "dofollow".

    Well to backlink, you first have to comment on a site that uses the dofollow tag. However an increasing problem is that a more and more webmasters are turning this off, to nofollow because of spammers.

    My question is, how does one find out whether a dofollow or nofollow is being used on a site?

    Click on Edit/Find in your browser. Search for "nofollow". If the page doesn't have it, the link probably counts.

    <a href="http://www.somelink.com/" rel="nofollow" />

    Code (markup):
    That's what a nofollowed link looks like.

    i think it's a valid way (even with no follow) to get your site indexed, that's what i know for sure. but a lot of friends, including me, would try to add something useful when commenting as it's the least we could do, right? ;)

    many seo rank well by blog comment(include no follow), even for competitive keyword. if you do not think , just see some top rank site, and see what backlink does it have. for example: wow gold , wow power leveling

    Reason most blog comments are nofollow is because it's set this way on default installation

    I have check that the comments that we are put in the blogs are start with the "no follow" tag so I was thinking that they can not help us in the indexing, but may be (as you say about the ranking) we get good ranking in the search engine did you confirm about the ranking.
    let me know
