US military ordered to kill stray dogs in Iraq

This is a few excerpts from an article I read on the Humane society's website today. source

"During the first quarter of 2005, The HSUS heard from many service members in Iraq, seeking intervention in the fate of rescued animals, mostly dogs, in danger of being confiscated and killed by military authorities. Soldiers confirmed that the U.S. government had hired contractors to kill dogs found on American bases in Iraq. Some military units were also ordered to shoot animals on sight."

"On March 29, HSUS CEO and President Wayne Pacelle sent a letter to Donald Rumsfeld, Secretary of Defense, asking him to rescind GO-1A’s prohibition on the keeping of animals. Wrote Pacelle: “In our view, it is the policy of confiscating and destroying unit mascots and rescued animals who have become pets, via euthanasia or gunshot, that may undermine the spirit of our fighting men and women.”

"Pacelle’s letter challenged Secretary Rumsfeld to authorize the shipment home of healthy, vaccinated, sterilized, and veterinary-certified animals (one per soldier, one time only) on a bi-weekly or a monthly basis from the war zone. He also pledged The HSUS’s assistance with the operation of a veterinary depot at one stateside location, where animals could be picked up by designated family members and friends of military personnel. Finally, Pacelle offered the help of The HSUS’s international division, Humane Society International, with the planning and execution of strategies for humane animal care and control institutions in both Iraq and Afghanistan, the other combat zone where GO-1A is being rigorously enforced."

"Rumsfeld sent no reply. But such a solution is well within the capacity of the U.S. military, which already permits the shipment of working animals on Department of Defense (DoD) aircraft. Because the DoD relies heavily on bomb, mine, and sentry dogs, there are numerous veterinarians and caretakers present in the Iraq theater, fully equipped to provide suitable care, treatment, and pre-shipment examinations."

By posting this, please don't think that I take the loss of human life in Iraq lightly. It is just that I love animals too, and this article was really hard to me to read. I know many American soldiers love animals, and I feel that they should never be forced by the American government to kill a stray dog they have befriended. Sad:(

p.s. I think this article was written in 2005, if anyone has newer info I would be interested in an update.

I wonder too if it's still an ongoing thing.. on the other hand, they could have had such an order because stray animals could carry disease, trip anti-personell sensors and security devices, etc.

Unfortunately, it seems the troops misunderstood that order because it seems they are mistaking the dogs for humans.

This was something I was very against.. Glad it has stopped.
This is one of the US troops actions I always condemned, My Animal loving eyes cant take any violence against any animal, So I deny to see any justification behind it.

But as a matter of fact, not only soldiers but terrorist were also killing dogs and using their dead body to hide IED roadside.

Holy Smoke of the crackpot!!! What are you doing here  This place is infectious!!

    Supp, Robbie :D :D

I wasn't aware I was on a trial for such an obvious admission. I did point out that terrorists used dogs and children. Is that where you derived your assumption of what I said?

That's no trouble at all. He ususally has a certain cheerleader by his side to offer consoling words of encouragement as he shares the delusional world he lives in :D

I wonder who that cheerleader is? Probably not this guy, huh?

I understand the government didn't create this rule because they are a bunch of dog haters, but at the time they made the decision they probably believed they were protecting the troops. But what about:

""Pacelle’s letter challenged Secretary Rumsfeld to authorize the shipment home of healthy, vaccinated, sterilized, and veterinary-certified animals (one per soldier, one time only) on a bi-weekly or a monthly basis from the war zone.

These are dogs that are in our custody, that are bomb free and they don't have to die. The humane society has offered there help...
We could thank the soldiers by not killing there dogs I think.

Well, the matter of fact is.. Even the U.S army has trained to use dolphins to detect and clear the land mines and use them to blow enemy submarines with explosive tied around them. Even Sea Lions are not spared.

Well, the matter of fact is.. Even human life is not taken into consideration and we don't expect them to consider animals.
