How long for a domain to open up?

Sorry, I have no idea where this topic would go.

I recently saw an expired domain that I really want, but even though its expired, I cannot grab it.

How long does it take for it to become active for anyone to buy it?

It takes around 3 months. (Although sometimes its less)
This is so that the owner can register it again if they've been on holiday/whatever when expiration has occured.

Use a service like http://www.pool.com/ for backordering. It's impossible to grab good domains that expired without backordering (and probably an auction once they grab it) nowadays.
