^^^ Above Are they profitable for you? I have always been on the edge of whether to promote them or not. I know there is a lot of money in them, but i don't know if I can bring myself to doing it or not.
You say are they profitable and then you say there is alot of money in them. Make up your mind, lol. If you use them it's up to you, but I know that there are some people that will like to look at nudity and would click away.
Adult business is much harder than mainstream business. In adult business 1:300 conversion rate is very good, in mainstream business the conversion rate is much lower.
Sure, the conversion ratio is lower. Difficult to sign up with a cc one-handed. That said, it is easy getting traffic for adult sites. It is very difficult to get significant traffic for a non-adult site, and without traffic you have jack. Most obvious strategies to get traffic for non-adult sites depend on a)investing heavily in advertising or b) second-guessing the actions of the guy at Google responsible for your niche. If someone can tell me another way to do it, I'm all ears, but in most cases the strategy is "be very lucky".
I used to be in that business, but sold out a year ago (I was an adult affiliate for over 5 years). It was fantastic money, but again, it's tough keeping secrets from family/friends. My advice: At the point the industry is now, if you are already doing well with mainstream and are comfortable, keep building mainstream. Stay out of adult. But, if mainstream is going nowhere for you and you don't mind the consequences of adult, then go for it. It's much more competetive now than years ago though, just a warning.
Yes, there is a lot of money in it, it's very good source of income. The only problem is for many moral issues, and unless you have a site of the same type then it's not worth ruining your site with gambling and porn ads. Google will even penalize your site eventually. Oh and another issue is that your site is now 18+ - cutting out quite a few of the member base. Hope I've helped clear things up
I have to say that the adult market it's a really good market to make money. but personally i prefer promoting herbal and other adult products than porn. for example i promote some adult products with webmasterlife and the results are amazing (check my signature for more infos).
Adult is definately good money. Compared to mainstream it's alot easier to get loads of traffic, but it's harder to convert. If you decide to test adult, I'd recommend going for rare niches, dating or livecams. The more free content is available for a certain niche (and there is an abundance of free content around in adult, e.g. on TGPs/Torrents/Tubes), the harder it gets to convert the traffic.

gamefray, Having come from that side as an Affiliate Manger for a well known program, I can personally say that the grass is indeed greener in mainstream. At this moment, you need to be able to generate a significant (...and I do mean significant) amount of traffic on a daily basis to compete and stay afloat in Adult. This is largely due to declining conversions. So starting out new and profiting is extremely difficult in this vertical. Not impossible, just very difficult as others like Kush have stated. On the flip, I have affiliates in LeadFlash that started out with almost nothing, but now are making 10's of thousands a month. I see greater opportunity for growth and success on this side (mainstream). In the end no matter it be mainstream or adult, you are in charge of whether you will succeed or not... -=Chipmunk=-
Promoting adult sites can really bring in a lot of cash. I know someone who was able to build her own small company using her earnings from an adult biz. If you think your own principles will be comprised or will be heavily affected then don't do it. If, however, you believe that it won't make you less of a person then go do it!
