Really good idea. It'd be nice to knock it off it's pedestal.

Brennan and I have invested a lot of money to get a custom script made up, and a lot of time designing, organising etc. If you don't want to support our site then that's okay, it'd be sad to see it all go to waste. It is hardly for profit, the server costs will be $xxx and hopefully not $xxxx a month

We should start the campaign now. Make a list of the alternative sites where we can upload our themes. We can all blog about it and spread it (social bookmarking sites) so that people can be pointed out to that "new" list.

rochow: if you can get themeoutlet to start working as the best alternative for themes.wordpress.net, then i think a lot of us will support you.

to those who think it's a good thing- IT'S NOT!
from now on you'll see poor themes on this site.
no sponsored links = no quality themes.

    think about it ;)

Hmm as I can see he now deleted many other themes.
Kate (from DP) wrote him a comment and he wrote an essay as a response about it: http://photomatt.net/2007/07/16/price-of-freedom/ (he also deleted her themes - see the comments)

    What are we waiting for?

Exactly.. no more quality themes. If they delete all sponsored themes on themes.wordpress.net! I'm sure it won't be worth visiting that site anymore. Then maybe matt should start making themes everyday, haha!

the themes that will be on the site will be pretty ugly.
and you're right, if you'll acually do it- they don't even worth a visit.

we all have to admit it.. we are AFFECTED here.
But we can't go on complaining.. im sure themes.wordpress.net
would take its downfall pretty soon. We know that soon,
they won't be having quality themes anymore.
Thing is, we need to do something now. NOW. Let's organize a team, I mean
most of us here can pretty much contribute in one way or
    another.

They deleted all my themes  (fortunatelly I had only 4 themes).

I think it is a perfect idea to join us designers together and build a new Wordpress themes site that will beat themes.wordpress.net. I think if gain more traffic than WP .net, then we will win.

I also registered a good Wordpress domain yesterday: WPmix.com. What do you think of it? I think it's a nice short brandable domain ideal for a Wordpress themes site. So I would be willing to share this domain with you guys and build a new WP themes site, better than WP .net.

maybe DP will take the lead and open a new themes index that will be better than themes.wordpress.net

or maybe we all should make a petition and then give it to the webmasters of themes.wordpress.net
I'm sure they will do something about it.

Perhaps selling sponsored links, with a maximum of 10 to minimise annoyingness.

A marketplace also, so designers and coders can be contacted/and also find jobs for custom wordpress themes ;)

We want to offer everything we can, so help us help you by telling us what you want :)

My vision is a community orientated site where people will love to visit regularly to find themes, tutorials, work... and even a forum eventually.

Rochow: :p once you add in that rating system and quality themes stay on top, well then people will naturally go to your site :D

Seriously.. when I look around for themes 70% of the time they're ugly! (I must be picky :p)

    Just 70%?!

Around 90% are pretty sucky in my eyes...

I am very particular though :)

Honestly i think it's a good idea to get rid of sponsored themes, some designers produce 2 UGLY themes a week just to put it on themes viewer and sell links. maybe it will encourage designers to work ONLY for themselves, which means less quality, more quality. After all, "just" a back link for ur site which u get from the downloads is already a lot of benefit.

As of right now im seeing ALOT of sponsored themes being removed from themes.wordpress.net

Remember theme submitters to Free Wordpress Themes - to update your downloads links!

This is why 10 spots are included, to give you many options as where you host your themes incase one site is unavailable.

    -----------

Also, theme designers you are welcome to post about your themes on: Wordpress Themes - if you are interested, contact me via PM.

The thing is that if you're a designer who wants to sell something, you try to make it perfect and nice. Only in that case you're going to sell it. So, the sponsored themes are mostly much higher quality. ;)

    Submitted 'Flaming shots'. Thank you

It seems very drastic, and in my opinion a very irresponsible action from such a big, influential site. How many people when submitting to other theme sites use their themes.wordpress.net links?
