if we do not create wp themes, may be Matt can create new themes(20 themes everyday).

and if he does not like links, he should delete the wordpress link on wp script.

there will be big theme sites(bigger and more popular sites than themes.wordpress.net), if Matt do like that.

    Yes, like www.themeoutlet.com

Really, they are helping us overtake them. A lot of our popularity will come from people wanting a site which works and is reliable.

We should support sites which are accepting sponsored themes. Someone should make a list on those sites for easier reference.

If they (themes.wordpress.net) will delete all sponsored themes, the ones that will remain are crappy ones which ppl won't be interested enough to use and download anyway, so im sure it will be a sure drop in visitors. We'll all just have to stay afloat for now.

Cool, no need for us to have to try and knock them off first spot.

They are doing it quite well themselves.

"Linda, sponsored themes are going to be removed, as per the community’s decision on them. However we will prioritize removing malicious themes over legit ones with a single sponsor link.

"Encoded themes are against the spirit of WordPress and the theme viewer, and will be removed.

Direct from themes.wordpress.net, it's great to see Matt destroying his website :)

The script is being made as we speak :)

"Bryce, registration and theme updating will be open again once we clean out the current mess. Most likely the user accounts will be merged with those on wordpress.org, so we have a single user and login system.

Ok..Now thatMatt has actually started deleting themes..We need to figure out a way to inform common wordpress theme user about the other sites which distribute themes. Majority of these users may not have any idea about these sites. they have been blindly relying on themes.wordpress. Now we need to create awareness among masses..we need to find a way to spread the words faster.... Any ideas about this? This need to be done as an intensive campaign..

    Ok, so my quick ideas:
    - we should make a list of those other sites, review them + add screenshots (for better remembering the site) and also write about things that are happening with themes.wordpress.net ...
    - we should post that article on our blogs and other "visible" places
    - than we should insert that article to digg.com and other social bookmarking sites

Remember that our clients are relying on us and they believe us! Also a thousand of bloggers would like new and quality themes, they need to find them!

Just add other points, or enhancements of these.

Exactly, themes.wordpress.net is not the "be all and end all" of the world.

Yeah, but just look around to any WP gallery and look at the download numbers ... then compare it to the themes.wordpress.net ... I haven't seen my last theme that wasn't uploaded to wp.net on any blog (according to Technorati) yet :(

    I can say why.

No offense to other site owners, but really, you have shot yourself in the foot.

You haven't made it easy to upload, people have to take all these screenshots and fill in all the details. Some sites even make you setup your own demo and have the .zip on your own server.

This leads to less submissions, and less people visiting.

The blogs are great aswell, but of course they only have limited themes as they can't manually add over 3000 themes!

So the solution is an automated, easy way to upload, yet still easy to manage.

I only ever go to themes.wordpress.net for the quantity of themes, not the quality. If there was a "sort by downloads" or "sort by downloads", people would be able to see both quality themes, and also have the quantity.

Look there was a SEO contest 'global warming awareness 2007' and you should see the results when you typed 'global warming' in Google. We can do the same but instead of competing we should all point to the same website which will be chosen as a new themes.wordpress.net.

Easy to be #1 in SEs if we work together, don' you think? :)

Also to make people aware about that new website, we could just create a theme without sponsored link, upload it to themes.wordpress.net and in the description of style.css inform users also about that new website. The info will be displayed directly on themes.wordpress.net ;)
