Is Craigslist On Its Last Legs? Ebay Launched A Competitor.

Have any of you used craigslist to generate traffic? I have and it works and now a new competitor looms on the horizon.

Kijiji.com (a mouthful meaning village in Swahili) its owned by ebay (by the way ebay currently holds a 25% stake in craigslist) and has been operating kijiji overseas and have launched the US site not too long ago.

Has anyone used this new site with any real degree of success?

I doubt they would ever catch up to craigslist 9 in alexa (US) 46 worldwide.

CraigsList has the advantage of critical mass... they will evolve as has ebay in adjusting to a value proposition to the market

CL is really big in the San Francisco Bay Area. I don't see anyone there leaving it.

Myspace is huge and tried launching a competing service (rather unsuccessfully) too. Once you have something that dominates the market that much, it would be extremely difficult for anyone, no matter how big, to come in and sway the majority of their users.

Craigslist has already established themselves as the leader in online classified ads and it's nearly impossible to overtake a leader in an online marketplace.
From what I've seen so far, Kijiji.com doesn't have any competitive advantage over CL. eBay would have come out better buying more shares of CL than trying to compete.

no. Kijiji has poor listing results and lacks quantity.

craigslist's strength is it's strong support for a wide range of HTML tags.
kijiji supports only limited text formatting and that must be done during positng, can't be pre-written. It's a great problem. You can't include an external image in your kijiji posting, you must upload it. A lot of limitations.

    craigslist is simply the best.

Am i the only one who thinks Craiglist is a horrible site? I struggle to see why people talk about it or even visit it.

This "horrible" site is one of the top 5 websites around the world. This same "horrible" site is worth billions.

This same "horrible" website is where people are basing their marketing businesses around.

For example, if you are a fitness instructor based in USA and you need quick clients then you post an "free" ad and you will get so many leads..

If you are a computer repair guy and seek clients then you post an ad...and the results will be tremendous.

Craigslist is an invaluable tool and I have used it and tested it and it has continuously made me lots of money.

I agree that Craigslist is ugly (if that's what you mean by horrible site), but I can get almost anything I want for cheap and make some good money on that site.

Gumtree is nice but they will not allow any html in the ad.. craigslist does in certain sections.
