Hi, I recently won an auction for a domain on snapnames.com. The domain has a google directory and dmoz listing. It's listed under an outdoor sports category. I am keeping the website outdoor sports related, however I am changing the focus to "bass fishing." Now, is there away to update my listing on google or dmoz. Right now the description mentions fishing, camping, hiking, etc and does not say bass fishing or anything. So when you search for the domain on google you receive an description that is not relevant to what the website is now about. Thanks
And if the Dmoz editor don't change the description, you can use the NOODP meta tag, then the dmoz description will be removed in Google results for the snippet
Would it be my best bet..to just make a website that is catered to these listings. Instead of narrowing it down to fishing. Should I just push content on the keywords in the descriptions?
The domain has a lot of backlinks mentiong camping, hiking, etc. None say bass fishing. Should I just make the website around these keywords instead of changing its focus?
If you want to make a fishing website make a fishing website, the links will still help you, just start a fresh link building campaign getting new bass fishing links, you should be ranking fairly soon with the Dmoz listing un all (on topic or not).
some help here the website is hookedontheoutdoors dot com. do a google search for the domain and you will see the things im talking about. now if i go emailing dmoz, and they change it will it change in google directory too? also, im scared if i request an update with dmoz they will pull the listing completely...
The Google description (in the Google directory) will not change unless the Dmoz description is updated and a new ODP RDF dump is done (and no one know if the Google directory will ever be updated again). If you're worried about your site being pulled from Dmoz and don't want to ask for an update, then, use the NOODP tag : you'll keep the link in DMOZ and Google dir, and the description in Google SERPs will change.
I think the Dmoz editors are pretty nice guys when it comes down to it and providing your new site meets the guideline I can't see them pulling it, make sure you have all unique content, not too many ads, proper contact address, phone number and whois info. and you will be fine. I see it also has a powerful Yahoo listing and a lot of other links as well, good buy. I think the name is perfect for a fishing site.
im thinking i will make this domain rank for "camping gear" "camping equipment" they are searched more than bass fishing, and there is more money in adsense and affliate programs in this niche.
Just keep everything quite then and like Monty said add noYDir and no ODP tags to get the proper title showing up in the engines.
