router problem

Ok I have no idea what I did, everything used to be fine.

    I had a setup of Cable modem -> SMC router > 2 PC's.

    Both computers could connect online.

Ok now, my desktop can access the internet but when I did a IP config, the ip address was the actual IP ( 24.84.x.x) instead of the internal IP (192.168.2.x)
So it SEEMS like my desktop is connecting directly through the modem itself.
I can't ping my laptop or the router with this desktop.

    LAptop:
    Can't go online.
    - did an ipconfig, everything looked fine (internal ip, etc)
    - can access router administration

I did power cycles for both router and modem, and did all the ip release/renew stuff.
No idea on how to fix. This is Wired by the way. So basically, I need both computers connected to the internet through the router again.

    Any ideas?
    thanks

If you have Comcast they require a different Mac Address for each computer so if you have Comcast call them up and tell them you need more IPs. They charge more but it's against their policy to have more than on computer hooked up to a single connection.

I'm in Canada, so I use shaw.
I had this setup for years, shouldn't be a problem.

I have 4 computers on the same connection through a router bought from Best Buy.
That policy is just to scam you out of about $200, or whatever their price is

what about hitting the reset button on the router in addition to the power cycles?

    i would suggest the same
to try to reset the router settings
if you cant access that than delete the current settings and establish a whole new router connection in both the systems

    i think that may work

hmm even if your ISP requires that you need a single IP, routers what they do is they themselves connect to the internet and then redistribute it over the LAN, so that the ISP thinks that there is only one computer connected(Router)...

SEcondly..if u did connect the desktop thru the router, i doubt it wud get the WAN IP, not even if you have the DMZ on..

give more specifics..what model of SMC are u using? Also did you change any advanced settings?

lol you got it all wrong..mate...what it says in the right bottom..i mean in the LAN Status box is ure IP..local 192.XXX

when you check on online sites many a times..it shows either your routers IP or from my knowledge..it shows the ISP's IP...thats what i have seen a lot from my ISP..

thats because its all routed through the ISP's ip....i am licing in Middle east..thats how it is here..dunno about US and all..

    start> run> cmd

    ipconfig/release
    ipconfig/renew
    ipconfig/flushdns
    ipconfig/registerdns

you really only need teh first 2, but the other 2 are optional
