It's because there is a chance that other site get indexed first and get benefits of your article, not you.
I'm wondering would it harm to post content that was indexed on your site.

For media (content), the more exclusive something is, the more value it has.

Putting your content elsewhere is like opening your wallet, taking out the cash inside and dividing it up between you and a group of other people.

 

Better to quote your articles and then link back to the full story. This way it acts as a teaser and also builds back links.
