Analysts say Google Will Take 90% of Market

'Google Inc., owner of the world's most popular Internet search engine, will take 90 percent of the market over the next decade through increased spending on research and development, analysts at Cowen & Co. said in a note Wednesday.

Google's 2007 research-and-development budget of $1.5 billion is almost double that of its closest rival, Yahoo Inc., the analysts said. Google's capital investments, estimated at $26 billion over the next five years, will finance development of the company's own servers and data centers, the note said.'

Erm, bull sh*t? Yahoo is the most popular search engine...
I agree that it will take a lot of the market though.

Myself, I would say judging from the larger number of yahoo mail accounts, broadband SBC/ATT Yahoo customers and their pre-configured Yahoo Home pages, the fact that I see more traffic from Yahoo than google to most of my sites, and their constant and consistent Alexa rating.

Google does not advertise.. Yahoo does... I don't know if I would go as far as to say they are "THE" most popular.. But they certainly rank up their with Google, and if nothing else, are equal in that regard.

As far as a search engine, Google for sure. But overall, Yahoo is a more popular website. However, I bet Google will take 90% eventually.

It is probably on the mark. For my site G already accounts for ~90% of the traffic from search engines. Ok, I should've spent more time optimizing for Y.

Another indicator is the number of people on DP viewing this Google thread, vs. other SE's combined :)

That's scary. I could never believe a prediction made that far in the future. But still, Google has continued to grow rapidly in terms of search market. I hope Yahoo continues to hold it's 20whatever percent for all our sakes.

I happen to like Google but I also think competition helps the end user and lowers prices. Yahoo really needs to get their act together

Last I heard, Yahoo was still used more than Google. Perhaps I am wrong. And why do people hate Google? I doubt Google will ever have that much of the market. But, the thing to remember is that the more you invest, the more likely you are to get a great return on profits.

Google is known to massively and secretly invest in wireless, cable and computing power. They want to dominate everything that's transmitting bits & bytes. They want to control and be able to analyse everything people do and think online (and offline) This is a worrying fact, and will probably have the effect that Google is hated even more than Microsoft in the future...

I do hope the "do no evil" motto will hold on for much longer. I doubt it will once they really get to the top though...

And just imagine how much power Google already has in the advertising world. They just know everything because they analyse every move of the users through their adsense network... Ever wondered why Google is so often "on top" of everything. Because they can track search habits using the SE, and monitor the collective behavior of people through the adsense/analytics tools.

Just to get you thinking ;)

I think you're confusing use of a site with use of a search engine. Yes, www.yahoo.com still gets many more millions of hits per month than www.google.com. Yahoo is #1 in traffic. Google is #3.

However, google owns 55-60% of the search market to Yahoos 22-25%. More people choose to use Google to search but they choose Yahoo for its mail, maps, groups, news, and countless other great features.

Thats interesting how no one even mentioned Live.com search. Microsoft definitely has a potential with their almost infinite capital and resource. I just bought new Pocket PC phone 6.0 and Live search is right on the desktop. Microsoft will keep throwing money at their search engine until it takes a large portion of search engine market. Thats just my opinion knowing Microsoft.

Yahoo is not the most popular search engine. Yahoo is the most popular web portal in the world in regards to TRAFFIC. Google processes more web search queries then yahoo, thus Google IS the most popular web search.

I think Microsoft gets kicked to the curb because they've lost a good chunk of their search market to Yahoo and Google. They had nearly 15% of the market a year ago but now they're down around 10%.

Don't be so sure. Do keep in mind that 95% of the computers being bought today have MSN Search programed into them by default...
