What would you charge?

What would you charge approximately for:
    - Designing a small corporate-style website
    - Roughly 6-10 pages
    - Client would want to be able to edit pages (i.e. a client list...) easily

So that would mean building a CMS also?

I suppose it depends on the complexity of the website. If they're wanting a nice flashy website with pretty graphics and whatnot, I'd charge anywhere between $1.5k-$2k.

Depending on the complexity of the site the price could go from $500 to $1000-$1500.

$350-$600 or less. It'll be a CMS with a secured admin panel. :)

I wouldn't say it would be more than $500.00. It would be around $200.00 if I were to do it. In my opinion a small website is 5-6 pages. A CMS can be done relatively easy but they can be time consuming and would bump up the price. If they just want to edit a small file manually to add/edit their pages then it could be done for a pretty cheap price.

Depends on if you are to create a custom CMS, or you can use one from one of the hosting sites.

Of the hosting site online cms systems (that allow you to do the entire site creation) I've seen none of them that put out SEO optimized pages. I would discourage using them.

If all the client wants to do is be able to manage the content of the pages, you can use a CMS like wordpress, which does a pretty good job. You can even get plugins to do a fair job on the SEO. With this you will create the site and they can edit, add etc pages within wordpress. This I would do for 300-500.

You could also create the site for them and have the content driven by your own database. I would do that, along with the admin section for about $1500.

I wouldn't touch creating a custom CMS that will be SEO optimized, for full site administration for less than $5000. But with what is already availible out there this would only be an option for a large company with very specific needs.

You should price this according to the time it's going to take you, rather than plucking a figure from nowhere that sounds ok.

What you should do is establish an hourly rate based on your experience, workload, ability etc. Try to think about a fair rate for your services. Estimate the number of hours the project will take you (realistically) and then do the math - pricing is too often just a case of thinking of a number, rather than considering what would be an acceptable hourly rate of pay for the work.

This is true to a degree. However, regardless of how much you would like to get paid, you have to also know what the market price is for various services, unless you have so much work that you don't care if you overbid.

As far as plucking prices out of the air. Once you've done enough similar work, it's pretty easy to get a general estimate. To get a detailed estimate would take far more information than he provided. I think he is just looking for ballpark figures. :)

There are several factors, but two main ones are

    -quality of coding
    -quality of design

if they both suck, not much. If they are very proffessional and you have a CMS 2k would be a fair price.

If the design is similar throughout the 6-10 pages then 200+
If coding php and sql is required 500+
