Intro to new directory. Feedback please.

So I decided to turn my old blog into a blog directory. I have modified a template to my liking and have done my best to customize the site. As I am in this long term, what would be some good starting points?

Well to be patient not to cut corners, be dedicated, be prepared to invest and operate your Directory while cash negative for up to a year

But its doable if you are transparent and use integrity

May be start with turning on "Search engine friendly URL"

Also, remove "Sponsors" for now.

ok its working now, not bad.. i dont like "Just another Blogs directory" this is very wrong from a marketing point of view.

 

I agree, I just needed something there in the mean time. I will change it soon...thanks for the feedback on that.

 

Since you are using phpld v3.2
In your Admin panel, under "Settings" menu you will see "Search Engine Optimisation", click on it and then select "Yes" for "Enable URL rewrite"

That will change your Category URLs to
http://theblogconnection.com/Directories/
instead of
http://theblogconnection.com/index.php?c=135

Better for SEO.

till i read the threads i wasnt sure so...

Dont forget to do "maintenence" check the links monthly using the validation
as this will de-activate any dead links...

You might want to activate featured links.

Reciprocal links are really not worth it, many directories including a couple of my new ones don't bother with them at all. Almost all recip links disappear or never give you any value.

 

think your most immediate need is to build up a strong foundation of backlinks from quality and strong sites. That, i believe, forms the basis of any successful directory...

 

If you want to be unique, make/buy unique template

 

if you are new in business, i think it would be better if you adopt both strategies: reciprocal and paid too. This is the same i did with free web directory when i was new. But i continued to use this method during the time. In my opinion... it is worth...
