Baidu isn't a very good search engine, in fact its plain shitty. You can purchase top listings, and I'm not talking about sponsored search.

Baidu has some things going for it:

Sponsored by the chinese government, they have turned off google, and I've even heard of them redirecting google traffic to baidu before.

Layout is better for chinese surfers. Users spend much more time on baidu (this is due not only to better layout but shitty results).

I'm thinking google will dominate in China as searches grow more savvy and start to realize they get better results with google compared with baidu.

    Thank you for getting it.

By the way, this is a nice link if you want to translate Chinese to English. Remember that Baidu uses Simplified Chinese.

You underestimate Baidu. Anyway, irrelevant. Use SEO techniques if you want to create Chinese web sites. You will get the money you want in time. Baidu is not for English language web sites. Better yet, go after Russian or Japanese. That is where the traffic lies at this time!

Who said anything about english language websites? Baidu has quite a poor algorithm even for Chinese websites. I'd say first hand experience using Baidu and talking to Chinese people who use Baidu helps me gain perspective.. Google is expanding fast here in China, in fact I walked by their new office the other day.

    Competition is good.

If you do well on Google, you should do well on Baidu.

I dont think baidu is good one.

I got a problem with language too.

When i do search with keyword "blogtantra" in google, it shows many searches, but when i did same with baidu, it shows nothing.

Is that what we call competition?

What Google has over any competing search engine is expansion into being something more than just a search engine. Google Maps, Google Shopping Cart, Google Ads, Google Search Servers, etc, etc, etc. Plus, they have an awesome HQ.

I wonder if they'll set up regional Baidus for the west? It would be like provincializing europe :D

Baidu will have its hands full with Japan and the rest of Asia for a while. They are patient. I think Google & Yahoo will do better with democratic and industrialized nations, though. I am not convinced that Baidu will do so well outside China. However, Baidu makes it difficult for others (e.g. Google) to get inside China.
