Just an interesting discussion: I wouldn't know since I am not one.. but for those who are against certain races, religion or sexualities... would you teach your child the same values? Telling them to hate _____ group because they're inferior to themselves ? (maybe that would be too direct... even implying negative things towards a group) Of course this is just a question of how such parents would raise a kid. Not how the kids will turn out (I was raised by extremely racist & homophobic parents and I turned out to be.. the complete opposite to what they're taught me). Your thoughts? For me, if I had kids, I would raise them to be accepting to anyone.. regardless of their religion, sexuality or race. That would be applying be my own beliefs to them.. so would haters do the same thing?
I would suggest that most parents - conciously or otherwise - instill their own beliefs and attitudes into their children. Wether the children maintain said beliefs as they get older is a moot point. Meow Purr.
Children learn by example. If they see someone full of hatred towards a particular cross section of society they notice and emulate that thinking it's an accepted norm. It's only when they become a bit more worldly, educated, accustomed to new experiences and receptive to new ideas that they begin to form an opinion them self. And we're all guilty of prejudices.
yes they do. enough said really. but i can post movies showing it, showing what people like qwestcommunications teach their children
I think there are a couple of factors that can be involved here. It is likely that parents who hate certain religion/race/sexuality will have an affect on their child - for the worse or for the good. It depends on how the child comprehends it and understands it. With your example, your parents are homophobic and racist, although you turned out to be the opposite - because you took their view of the world and analyzed it for yourself - "Is it really how i am supposed to think/act ?" "Why should i hate this/that ? Is there a good reason for this ?" and so on. (correct me if i'm wrong) Not only that, but it comes from society and it's influences. If a child that lives with racist parents, in a racist society - most likely he would turn out to have the same views as the rest of the society. HOWEVER, there are minority of kids who will not follow the society in these cases. If a child thinks very highly of his parents and has enormous respect for them, he can be easily brainwashed by their teachings and views. For me, it's the same as the kids who were raised to be believers from a young age by their parents, and they go to church every week since - because they were taught that way, because they are used to. But some never come to think about WHY do they believe, what are their reasons ? Was it because of mom and dad's education ? Or was it because of the child's rational thinking ?
It's sad really I would feel horrible trying to teach a child to hate someone because they're different.. and even worse when the child takes action upon the hatred. (ex: bullying or beating another kid) Thank goodness for the public school system that teaches kids otherwise
Well, I am not sure if they will deliberately influence their children, but their views and actions will certianly have some kind of influence on thier children. For example many of the descendents of Nazis are sympathetic towards their fathers/mothers. Its only natural. There is a saying "like father, like son", I think there ais a lot of truth in that.
Yes that's correct. They were just running words out of their mouths while I was a child, I was exposed to a diversity of races (Canada ) and found that none of these racial stereotypes applied to them at all. Hmm... I guess I can give some credit to the school system that emphasized on how everyone is equal.
yea like father like son, it's a shame your son will be homophobic and hate people because they are different. but who do you blame? you? your father? your son?
Take for example Farfour's death [killed by an Israeli] that was presented to young children. These little kids are brainwashed not only by their parents, but by society as well. They grow up, and never come to think about why in the world do they hate Jews so much. "Because jews are evil!" "because Jews stole our land!" "Because Jews want to take over the world!" But in all - it comes down to "Because that's what everyone around me says and thinks!". A very rare case would be a kid that has grown in this kind of society and actually against such things - this means he progressed by himself, he actually stopped to think for a second or two.
For actions: I can't imagine If I was a kid and saw my parents beat a native american just because of his race, I would have been extremely confused.. I don't think I'd go follow what they were doing.. but again it depends on how much you follow your parents.. regardless of how many of these racist actions they did...
Yes children are a product of their parents morals and beliefs. This is sad but true. If you look back of some of the things good and bad you learned from your parents, you will see this for yourself. Can you change as an adult, yes but even if you try, some of those beliefs will still be there for teh rest of your life.
Most parents will teach their children to only do good in this world. Its not really a problem because racists are few and far between.
No, I would blame the source. It's kind of in our human nature to create.. these negative opinions against certain groups. Like... let's say if Bob sees a majority blue people stealing and drinking, he'll make an assumption that all of them do. Or if a red person beat him as a kid.. he might hate red people throughout his life. Depends on how open minded and educated we are. .. don't forget homophobics
Hmmm... perhaps thats the key. Not so much what the Parents say, but the attitudes of the 'peer group' that the child grows up in. If a child is surrounded by hate, with no other voices, then inevitably he/she will integrate that as being 'normal'. Isn't there some clip doing the round on the internet... proporting to be from Iranian daytime TV.. where the AnchorBurqa is talking to a three-year old girl, who says "oh gosh yes, all Jews are pigs and dogs and have no more right to live than an Aubergine"... or words to that effect ? Didn't someone famous say something like "give me a child untill he is seven" .. implying that children ARE maleable at a young age,and can be "conditioned"... for better or worse. I can't remember who it was. I hope it wasn't Oscar Wilde though, as it would paint the saying in an ENTIRELY different light Meow Purr.
Exactly what I'm thinking.. I'm glad they give good education up here for elementary - highschool.. I mean there are more knowledge that other people should know.. such as psychology but that's the University level and most don't go there..
