Google and free subdomains...

Hi, I recently read "the PLAN" and i would like to give it a try, the problem is: I really can't afford a paid domain now. So my question is: Is it ok to start with some free subdomains like geocites,or other free hosts that offer subdomains..? Is it possible to get good rankings, add your site to directories and submit articles using a free subdomain host??? Does google and the other search engines "looks down" on free subdomains or treat them differently?

To sum it up, Is it possible to get anywhere using free subdomains???

Thanks i really appreciate any help.

When I first started I had and SEO site on a sub domain that did pretty well for some SEO related keywords like affordable SEO and ethical SEO

It's possible to get somewhere but not very far..

If you make a site your PR will be linked to that geocities page.
If you later buy a domainname and move pages, you'll have to start all over again building links to your new site.

It depends on what you want to do. If it's something like a blog, it's better to start it immediately on blogspot.com and put adsense on it. Later you can link a domainname to the same content.

Domain and websites are really cheap if you look around.. you can't invest $2 a month or so ?

If you have a free sub domain then you are making your life as a website owner 10 - 50 times harder so the cost of some cheap web hosting and a purchased domain name in the long run will benefit you and actually save you money as you will need much less time to do things.

Free sub domains hold you back in a big way.

Domain names are very cheap. It's less than the cost of a trip to the cinema to get a .co.uk for two years, for instance.

Getting a domain name and proper hosting is one signal to your visitors that you are serious about your website. This is why many free directories won't list websites that don't have their own domain name.

I'm trying to figure out what this means...

It is better to register your own domain name...It accrues value over time and you can sell it later if you desire....you can't really sell a blogspot or free host name because it doesn't really belong to you.
