Just finished posting my own very personal review about odp. Please rate the same and comment if you have time out of your personal life I know it might not be the best or what was expected from a burnt editor but hey i do whats best for everyone. Enjoy the read. Dmoz Web Directory Review
"Dmoz or also known as ODP (open directory project) is the one and only volunteer edited directory." Ummm, Bunny? That statement is not correct. Two other directories that use volunteer editors are Skaffe and JoeAnt. Most likely there are more.
There is a new directory/search service on the block as well... it's called www.mahalo.com. I'm a former AOLer and the former GM of Netscape and I launched it about a month ago. We have a program called "Greenhouse" where users can not only create search results (aka directory pages) but get *paid* for doing so. You can see details on the greenhouse here: http://greenhouse.mahalo.com. Mahalo can be seen here: www.mahalo.com. all the best, Jason
Without published stats it is impossible to state that the directory is still growing. The last stats that were published seemed to indicate that it was actually contracting in most English language categories. The long outage will have done nothing to improve productivity. Further, in many categories the lack of editing resources means that there are an incredible number of spam sites and dead links - I am thinking mainly of travel related categories where it can be as much as 80% affiliates and mirrors. These are not listable sites, should be removed, and should not count when considering the number of sites listed.
How bout i rephrase it to Dmoz or also known as ODP (open directory project) is the one and only largest volunteer edited directory
As my little math lesson has shown there is very little activity going on and Annie's removal probably caused more damaged to editor ranks then the server crash. I'm betting metas have stats reports in there hands but would rather die then release them to the public since it would prove their total incompetence to everyone and the fact that DMOZ is clinically dead and is being kept on life support until AOL decides to pull the plug.
The 90/10 rule probably applies to Dmoz editors as much as to anything. So it's probably only a handful of really industrious types who keep it going.
Problem is that handful of really industrious types is gone, left is bunch of paranoid shot first ask questions never power junkies which probably constantly annoy everyone in real life bragging how they are meta editor at DMOZ and get angry when nobody gives them attention that should come with their divine status and instead gives them minstrel's business card.
