The recent discussion about BigWebLinks reaching 1,000,000 backlinks in Yahoo! (congrats Chris!) got me curious as to the number of backlinks various directories have. So, I’ve prepared a ranking of directories by backlinks. I’ve used Yahoo! (linkdomain command) to find out the number of backlinks, as MSN has disabled their backlink checker and Google has purposefully been misleading webmasters with their backlink checker for years. One thing to note about the number of Yahoo! backlinks is that they seem to fluctuate within a range of about 10% or so, so all of the figures are approximate, and are just snapshots of what I found today. The big winner, of course is Yahoo! as they are much more than just a directory. They come in with a whopping 633,418,783 backlinks. Interestingly enough, Dmoz has “only†5,008,508 and Business.com has “only†2,606,612 backlinks, which seems something that can be achieved by a determined directory owner with in a reasonable period of time. Without further ado, you can find the rankings here: http://www.avivadirectory.com/downloadblog/?p=309
Thanks. I hope to see zorg links up there some day. However, the backlinks of a site don't make it good. You could buy 4 sitewide links on sites with 60,000 indexed pages, and get over 100k backlinks. Nice post Jeff Rep added. Mike
The one thing you didn't take into account Jeff is that dmoz or business.com backlinks do not come from sitewides! I don't think dir.yahoo, dmoz and business.com should be in the same list as all other directories buy links and sitewide links inflate the numbers without giving true assessement on the value of a website. just my opinion.
Nice list. www.directorydream.com has 230,000 backlinks. It's not in the list though, so you might consider adding it. Thanks
Interesting list. Nice work with breaking in different sections. Alivedirectory is next to Business.com {wow} I think maxlinks.org is missing in the list with 417,751 backlinks.
Wow a great list. Alivedirectory is now in 4th place. but i'm sure they will go 3rd place by end of this year. go alive go
Another of your great contribution Jeff. I always envy - it. Also --there can be another list based on Unique IPs linking to a directory. As some members mentioned --sitewide listings can really inflate the Yahoo backlinks counts. IMHO - there will be no change though on the top -- Alive, Aviva, DD, Dirsensei, will always be there. Some others will also move-up and some will come down. Just adding another variety
Nice list, however, it would be really faboulous if you could eliminate the sitewides and restrict it to 1 link per domain name. I honestly believe that all the search engines severely deprecate sitewides Tho, off course they're good for traffic
How do we get backlinks without showing sitewides? or showing sitewides as just 1 backlink? is there any specific command for that?
good work jeff and thanks for adding Wezp Directory to list. Also just curious do you think update the backlinks?
Great work jeff. This will help out alot to see which directories are pushing the hardest in terms of link building. I'd like to make one point though regarding the sitewides. IMO it does not matter if sitewides are counted for the simple fact that I think people do not understand the level of difficulty involved when it comes to getting all of those links. There is still alot of cost involved when obtaining that many links and therefore the sites listed should be noticed for that. Either way good work.
