Has there ever been a movie sequel better than the original?

With the plethora of sequel's or tri-quel's this summer, it got me thinking...is there any movie you can think of, current or past that was a sequel that was better than or par with the original?

Seems like everyone has said that all part 3's this summer for instance weren't as good as the 1st.

Is it just a natural occurrence based on the reoccurring characters? Or do the sequels just want to earn $$, not really concerned with telling a good story?

 

The lord of the rings sequels, two towers and return of the king is way better than fellowship.

 

I can see how that's true.. even though I'm not a fan of LOTR but they did improve..

finding good sequels = rare

 

sequels of american pie and scary movie made me laugh!

 

I think Shrek 2 better then the original... but the third I think was the worst or the three.

 

The Don was as good, if not better, compared to the original.

Well there are very few and LOTR is not one i can be sure

For exemple Man in Black 2 was very good

 

I've never seen wither MIB's! I heard just the opposite though, that 2 was too over the top or something to that effect!

harry potter seem to be growing more and more with age!!!

 

I think in most of the cases sequels are better than originals ..you can have the example of Scary Movie sequel. 2,3 and 4 are far better than the original.

 

The Road Warrior was a better movie than the first one (Mad Max). It had a lot more action and excitement. The second Star Trek movie was also a lot better than the boring first movie.

 

definitely the godfather part 2. vito growing up in the states (part of the 1st book, but cut out of GD1). and poor ol fredo.

Scary Movie like Potter deserves to be in a class by it's own I think. Kids are going to go see potter b/c it's potter and teens+ are going to see the Scaries b/c they are goofy...hard to fit them into a mold per say

another one I think that might be considered equal to or as good as the original...The Borne Series, Identity and Supremacy. I enjoyed both of those, be interested to see how the 3rd one comes along.

as well as the Brazilian job the sequel to the Italian job...I hope it's as good.

 

Sorry, cant agree there, MadMax was/is a classic, the Road Warrior was good and as you say packed full of action and excitement but it is not a classic film.

Many sequals benefit from the advances in special effects available and the fact that securing quality funding is easier because of the success of the original film/idea, when you take this into context, many sequals do not live up to the promise of the original film.

 

I think Rocky 3 was better than the first one. I think it was three, the one with the Russian. Who can keep them straight. Does anyone remember Rocky's two pet turtle's names ?

I also agree about the Lord of the Rings series. The second and third was better than the first.
