Just done a blog post inspired by Aaron Wall offering 5 good reasons why article submission is a poor SEO tactic. http://www.seoco.co.uk/blog/2007/07/01/5-reasons-why-article-submission-is-a-poor-seo-tactic/
the purpose of submitting articles isnt usually traffic. people usually do it for the back-links and exposure. and if you write an article right, then they will link to you and not the article site they got it from. just my 2% of one dollar
The article is more sort of why you should publish them on your own site as apposed to on article sites, I have edited the post to try and make that a bit clearer, publishing an article in more then one place is a total waste of time for SEO as Google will only count one of the articles.
I thought article submissions were done with backlinks in mind and not a direct traffic. For a direct traffic the social bookmarking sites are a much better solution.
the articles i put on ezines and article sites dont get on my site. its really no big deal to write a few extra marketing articles
I don't think that calling it a 'poor SEO tactic' is quite right; as the people above said- it depends what you are actually trying to achieve with the article submissions.
That depends on how you submit the articles. Google will index the first one found and the rest as supplemental result, which hold no value/weight. However, if you spin the paragraphs, change the sentences or creative wording, Google might not find it as duplicate and you might benefit from it especially it is posted in authority/high traffic/PR site. I have never tried it before, as I'm not a fan of this practice but in theory it might work.
You are right this technique can work but I just see it as trying to deceive the engines so I would not use it, even if I did the article sites are that overcrowded and full of junk that the links will hold very little weight and it means it is not worth your while.
Interesting article, although I don't completely agree. I think article submissions are reponsible for earning me some pretty good money.
Article submission has worked very well for me with regard to both SEO and traffic generation. I therefore do not agree.
