    Hello,

alot of fuss about this, but how did they make Windows?

Most of the people I know say they made it by hand (i was like )

Some of them say they made it in C++ which I can understand.

    Many thanks rep giving.

Gates neither stole nor admitted anything. Both, Microsoft and Apple, got their ideas from the initial Xerox design.

Bill G did once admit that the kernel was mostly written in C, and that some low level routines (e.g. some device drivers) were straight assembler.

The applications around the kernel were then wrapped in a C++ layer.

However, since Vista has been supposedly written from the ground up, I suspect that most of the code base has now shifted to C#

Just an educated guess though :)

It always depends whether we are talking about the 3.x/9x or the NT series. But in this case I suppose the latter. Many interesting background information about the development of Windows NT can be found in the book "Showstopper! The Breakneck Race to Create Windows NT and the Next Generation at Microsoft." (ISBN 0-02-935671-7). It also mentions many interesting details about NT's lead developer David Cutler.

There was certainly many code newly written for Vista, but their "everything from ground up" is simply wrong. Vista is based on XP, which in turn is based on 2000, which came from NT 4. There is also certainly many new "managed" code but the majority is still C and assembler.

The next system written from "ground up" might be Singularity.

Why are you asking? Are you going to create your own OS in C++?

Anyway, they used C and some talented coders.

Agreed. One of the finest books - not only about Windows OS development, but the computer industry as a whole - ever written.

    A must have.

I can't say for sure about Vista using C#, but I know for a fact that Visual Studio is now coded in C#.

(maybe the department of redundancy department uses visual studio to write the c# code for visual studio?)

OK, Project Shellfish? I want in...:)

Tell me more! I'm guessing it involves a little more than getting an Acer machine to boot Windows!
