How much money to be spent?
Whome to approach ? of-course the publishers, but any good press release agencies, freelance reporters can help ?

What else do I need to know .. ?

I want to spread the word out for some of our applications

I wouldn't want to read about those in a newspaper so a specific/niche magazine would be a better choice in my opinion.

For magazines there's usually contact details of the editor so you can easily send him a letter/email and inform him about your amazing product which he may be interested in writing about.

What you're talking about is a pitch letter; not a press release. Don't ever get promotional (such as using terms like "amazing") in a press release, or you'll just hit the trash.

I run a PR firm. Here's what I'll tell you about the issue cost-wise: If you do it all yourself (which you should only do if you know what you're doing), it's pretty much free (assuming you're actually sending it to journalists / writers - free press release distribution sites won't be the way to go for the kind of coverage you're looking for). Hiring a professional will cost several hundred to several thousand for writing and distribution. If you can write it yourself well, but don't have media contacts, you can usually buy an industry-targeted list from someone like Burrelles-Luce or another big media contact database.

As for the How-to, here you go:

Press Release Template (the same one I use for my firm's clients)
