    Thanks pipes.
All I am trying to say is that I just don't think that you can just wake up one morning and say :"OK I am going into the ring to fight Mike Tyson"..... If you are not trained and prepared to do so. You are soooo dead. You slowly make your way up. It may take some time, but you will have the chance to make mistakes (which will not cost you much) and learn from them. The final result may come at a later time but it will be stable and more probable to happen.

I don't think there is a competition in directories?

people who will submit in yours will also submit in mine provided we both have good quality directories.

How much does it cost? In theory you don't have to spend a single penny. Choose a good free script, phpLynx is probably the best, don't take my word for it,compare and see yourself.

You can get free web hosting from lots of places which will tide you over through the 'development stage', work your socks off getting content and submit to as many good free directories as possible. you can leave the paid ones til later down the line.

Having money will always speed things up but the fact is you CAN create a succesful directory without spending a cent but it is a hell of a lot harder than doing so with some coin.

Your right, a slow approach is good and anyone doing that is learning along the way and building reputation too, the following quote comes to mind from the film Colors:

"There's two bulls standing on top of a mountain. The younger one says to the older one: "Hey pop, let's say we run down there and f**k one of them cows". The older one says: "No son. Lets walk down and f**k 'em all". :)

I agree it truely can be done without spending cash, as you point out The Pheonix, plenty hard work but its an option if someone is extremely strapped for cash, everyone deserves a chance to be someone and enjoy their success.

I have bought one a while ago, I paid a lot for it, but the income is really great. Here is a building tutorial I found.

I think where the cash comes in is when you are trying to boost pagerank beyond 4 or 5. You almost have to buy links to do that (or have some existing sites with high pagerank). But just to run a moderately profitable direcctory, it doesn't cost that much. I have 2 that make me a few hundred per month with minimal time commitment (keep telling myself I will work on my own directories one of these days).

If you are planning to start a paid directory, you should first spend for quality sitewide links and give importance to name recognition. Do it for the fame at the beginning. 1000$ may be enough for this. When people start to recognize you and pay for submissions, you should spend all money you earned in the first three months. After two PR updates you can see the real profit. :)

    I wish you good luck.

You might want to check this tutorial on my blog.
You might find it useful on the link building part.

Not necessarily crazy, even though it might be a gut reaction, it's a bold statement. More to do with marketing than budgeting your expenditure though

    nah. not necessarily

not the power of dump, but more of a statement that if you want to try to outbid me by $11 little dollars, then i'll see you at the next level.

    see above post :)

pretty good analogy of it. definitely a 'statement' ;)

as pipes said you can even start one with 10@ but its just going to be Yet another directory if you dont invest in $XXX, so invest more and earn more...

    Thats a really valuable tip i gave :p :D:D
