You forgot to mention a good amount $$$$. that is the top most, if you have that, you can have an idea converted into reality pretty soon with the help of any hired team, and skill people not before.

I would say get yourself a niche product or learn how to build websites (You may know how to do this). I sell two items on-line and it is two things I know a hell of a lot about, so I get a lot of word of mouth and have hit the first page on google for one site, which has trebled my hits.

But one anyone with a bit of knowledge can do is build sites for local businesses. Some people put ads in papers, which I do not. I get hold of the yellow pages and find all businesses without sites and email/write to them asking if they would like a site building, show them some of my work and tell them I will do it a hell of a lot cheaper than anywhere else. I also list the pros of having a site in the first place. I get a very good response, some saying they had thought about it but the quotes were too high and others saying they did had not thought about it and it would make a lot of sense.

I usually do one a week and charge around £250, so its a nice little side earner.

I run three websites with adsense. Am preparing another website with affiliate links. For a part time venture it does OK.

If I had to do it all over again would have started a software company.

Currently run two; one is a gaming entertainment label which houses a successful internet radio station, digital magazine and numerous existing and upcoming websites/resources... this one makes me little money, but keeps me entertained and interested in "operating" on the internet.

The other is a fledgling web development company. Right now we're focused on pre-made sites/scripts and website content; however the gameplan is to extend into custom development work.

I have started a company in the crowded Web Design and management space. Also looking to create a few niche sites and work on building up a nice portfolio of sites. Winning the lotto would not be bad either :)

I own a retail store but I am looking to set up a online store for it. I also sell on eBay. I am also getting interested in the idea of setting up a adult website but honestly know very little about the business. If any1 can shed some light on it please let me know.

    Thank you

I'm running a retro arcade site with download games, retro remakes and an online retro arcade. It's a bit different than the usual gaming portals/online arcades.

one of the best online businesses seems to be an offline business -> become a famous guru and sell the same stuff you sell online for $97 on seminars for thousands.... (it happens every day and I "don't really think this is good..." BUT if people act on the advice and packages just because they were expensive it was worth it - unfortunately most don't)

Only you can answer the "best" question.

You didn't specify a startup and working budget. The "best" online businesses today take money.

Or did you mean the "best" online businesses for someone with little cash and a lot of time?
