Don't worry if he/she is reputed or not.

I have reported the thread to the Mods and lets see if he gets any infractions for spamming or not.

If any Mod can put in his/her imput it will be a lot useful and clarify things for all.

That's interesting. So if the PM were something like

"Hello, I noticed you are selling links on your website at xxxx.com. I would like to talk to you about purchasing 20 or 30 links there for the next year, please let me know a little more about it."

would you say the same thing? I find it hard to believe someone would turn down business because they were PM'd. That's like sticking AIM or MSN in your profile but getting mad when someone contacts you, that is what it's for. The person the OP mentioned happened to be selling something instead of buying but it's the same thing, an offer for a transaction between two webmasters.

If you do not want to send or receive private messages, you may disable the private messaging system.
    Enable Private Messaging

You may limit the receipt of private messages to just moderators and those on your buddy list. Other members who attempt to send messages to you will be told that you have disabled private messaging.
Receive Private Messages only from Buddies and Moderators

This looks much easier than playing hall monitor for a forum of 70,000 members.

Every forum I've ever been on, especially those geared towards specific niches such as webmasters, had the PM system enabled for people to contact each other. It's not like he went down the line sending messages to every member here, he noticed you looking for links and offered you (drumroll) links. I sent several PM's asking about purchasing things today, is that spam as well?

If the person is intersted in one's service he will contact on the thread. I think for that forums owners have started thread.

If this can be allowed then why start a thread. Just go on sending pm's to everyone.

When I got into this business (well before forums were a big deal) people contacted you by any means necessary if they had something to offer or request from you. This included email, ICQ, phone, etc. In a regular old brick & mortar business people call, write, and stop by often to discuss business with you.

Don't get me wrong, the forum owners here can do anything they please but your view of this is skewed in my opinion. I am a webmaster. I am here to network and talk to other webmasters. If someone PM's me to offer something a webmaster might want the last thing I am going to do is get upset about it and call them out. At the most I might ask them not to PM me again but even that seems silly.

Go ask any marketer that has been around since the 90's how they did business. Each and every one of them will tell you that they did everything they could to talk to potential associates. Hell we spend thousands of dollars to go to conventions for the sole purpose of meeting other webmasters so that all of us can make money.

Is this just a hobby for you by chance?

It's hardly pointless having a discussion considering we are on a discussion forum. If you don't want to explain your reasoning that is your choice but this is a topic about the industry and forum we are posting on. It's completely relevant and discussionworthy. :D

OH MY GOD, Thanks col for Letting me know about this Thread on MSN, To the OP you cant imagine how upset i am about this thread, i care so much about my reputation on digitalpoint.

First i never spammed anyone, Am doing a promotional pre-launch offer for one of my new services and i contacted the OP after seeing that he was interested in having links or directories submissions on the services Section, my offer was relevant and i got Only positive responses from other Members and DigitalPoint friends.

i get offers from DP members everyday, and its not Considered SPAM, its a Business Proposal, there is a big difference between MARKETING AND SPAMMING ? (Please DIGG MY WEBSITE, Please Click on My adsense Ads) What i was talking about was relevant to something you were looking for.

I cant believe this is the response i get from You after Making you such a great OFFER, how old are you ? i swear i was even looking for a business Partnership with you. but now no, thanks forget about it, i hate spam more than you how can you considere a kind business or partnership offer as a spam?

We are here to make friends, Partners and new clients, if some members didnt send me pm's when i just joined DP i'll never be where i am now, i got Pm's from Coders, Directory submitters, Links Partners and because i was looking for those services then i was happy to get them, DID i PM ME YOU ASKING YOU TO BUY CHEAP VIAGRA FROM MY .INFO WEBSITE ?

Grow up Please, Enjoy the company and the opportunity of meeting Digitalpoint members and Have a nice day, oh and thanks for everybody who said this IS NOT A SPAM before even they know that it was My PM.

Dude, Getjimmy hasnt posted in this thread yet ;)

Dude, If the sender was funkyMario, then you're just creating a fuss here.
He sent you a business proposal, offering something you were looking for, if you were not interested in the ofer you should have replied him and told him that you're not interested in the offer and not to send unwanted PMs anymore.
I bet he wouldnt send you another PM for rest of your life.

But you choose to create a fuss and accused him of being a spammer? geez.....

    Well,

I'm glad I'm not the only one that sees no problem with this. I thought I was in the twilight zone there for a bit.

The thread should have been checked. Funkymario doesn't spam... a proposal or inquiry about a thread is not spam, it's pretty much expected that people can PM you about thread u were interested in..

It really does not matter if it is Funkymario or someone newer, if they offer a service that you have expressed interest in on the forum and send you a PM, then you have the option of deleting it, writing back and declining or just ignore it. We are a webmaster forum for goodness sake, we are here to do business. If I reported ever PM I got from stuff I expressed interest in, they would have to assign a new mod just for my inbox.

I usually delete the message and ignore them. If they persist then definitely give them a bad rep.
