Would a banner ad on a details page in paid directory bother you?

    Would you be bothered about a directory displaying one banner ad on details pages, if its a paid directory.

    The reason im asking is that although its not "your details page" if you know what i mean, you have still payed for the listing (oops sorry, paid for the review) ;) and if you have paid for extras that gives you a nice good looking listing on your details page, with deeplinks and what have you, would you then think how dare they place a banner on my details page?

    I wouldn't do it with my directory to be honest.

    That said, I guess in part it would depend on how the banner is displayed in relation to the details. If the banner is positioned to look like it's part of the site being listed - not cool.

    Bad idea imo. The only information that should be on a detail page is the information related the site that has paid to be listed. Detail pages should not include sitewide listings either.

    I agree. For sure, show it on category pages etc. Detail pages is for details on the website, nobody wants a flashy banner taking the google juice and screen attention away

    I think a paid for listing deserves to have no ads on the detail pages so as to give the site that has paid for the listing the best exposure possible.. header banner i think is the exception to this and acceptable..

    I have used the following code:

    {if $FEATURED == '1' }
    <br />
    {else}
    {include file='show_ads.tpl'}
    {/if}
    Code (markup):
    so that the ads/image sponsors are only shown on the free listing pages and nothing is shown on the featured detail listings pages... I think thats a fair solution. :)

    Example:

    Featured: (no ads at bottom)
    http://www.thefreewebsitedirectory....or-position/Bid-Up-Links-Web-Directory-2.html

    Free: (ads along bottom)
    http://www.thefreewebsitedirectory.co.uk/directories/paid/Linkage-Plus---Web-Directory-4.html

    YMC, well i feel if a banner is up top and not mixed into the middle of the sites various details it could look quite tidy.

    The Pheonix seriously? but you didn't pay for the listings page, you paid for a review, and i own the page. :)

    Overall, what if any revenue earned from the banner ad gets ploughed back into the directory?

    I agree with your overall statement as that is why I have sponsered banner ads and will be adding the sponsered ads as well so that everything I make goes back into the directory itself

    While one can argue the submitter doesn't own the details page,we can also argue that it's a selling point as well. Isn't that why we add all the fluff and stuff to them...to attract potential submissions.

    I think it's wrong to add dozens of links and stuff to other sites on a details page. All things being equal otherwise, would you submit to a directory with links and banners on the details pages or one that does not.

    But i have seen some details pages where their stuffed with things, some being of not much use, i agree the details page is a selling point for them, thats true, but one clean banner on a details page is not the same as a mess of ads on there.

    Personally i would and will submit to a directory that puts ads on a details page, on their submission page, and possibly other places.

    If a listing has the rights to the details page then maybe they should have a login and password to their details page.:)

    They haven't bought a right to the page.

    As an example:

    If i go to the cinema, i have not bought the film, i have paid for the privilege of viewing the film, therefore a cannot choose if i do or dont see ads before the film, i own nothing, i just paid for access, i could close my eyes of course.;)

    But i cant stand up on my seat and scream no ads please.:)

    It is possible that it could be stated clearly on the submissions page that One banner would be displayed on the details page and then if the submitter objects to that they can just avoid submitting if they feel strongly opposed to the ads.

    It would seem that most here are against the idea. My next question would be, would the risk of losing the paid submissions of those who hate the idea be made up for in the banner revenue?

    YMC, a good point but what about all the people that dont hang out here, they dont have time to obsess over details like this and maybe wouldn't mind at all.

    The things that we get wrapped up in are maybe very minor and trivial to other submitters who dont follow every last detail.

    I get more submissions from non DP directory owners in most of my sites and IMHO I don't think it matters to them wether or not I have a header banner or Sponser ads on my site. A good link will always lead to good pr and thats why Sponser advertise is so thier sites can be seen for example
    I am checking out so and so detail page and I see somewhere else I can add my link I will go for it

    Each to his own kind of thing, me personally if I pay for a listing I do not want someone else's banner on my details page regardless. I paid for that page is what I'd be thinking. But hey, I don't think I'm alone. :)

    Your not
    ....as i wont do it either as thats the customers page and dont feel it should be thier...
    hense i may be removing the Scrolling Sponcers from those pages and offer them relevant info
    "Articles or News" so as to keep them out the serps ;)

    Thing is.... I and silkysmooth have been so busy transferring all directories to new IPs and as well
    adding New articles and news feeds that we havent had time for the other stuff that we need
    like the Pay first mod, and another "secret squirrel mod" being devolped so... Just not enough hours in the day :(

    thx
