So, I think we just NOT spending anymore time or money to submit to "free directory"......... as no backlink at all.......... and I doubt that it will generate meaningful traffic...............

The next question is: what should I do now?

for link building, of course. Back links from free directories aren't counted, back links from paid directories can be detected in the future, then we should forget about link building from directories. Useless.

I have been recently submitting my sites to free directories. After reading this thread, i wonder if it has been a total time waste or it would really help in generating some traffic to my sites and compensate a lil. Please clear this doubt.

Directories won't ever give you traffic, forget about that. Sending your site to free directories is not a waste of time. Every single links counts for google. You need to make a huge database of free and reciprocal directories to send your site to. It takes time, I know, but it gives good results.

Get a database of at least 2000 directories, and send your site to all of them using a set of 5-10 different keywords. You will see results on your rankings before you know it.

Of course, results will depend on many factors, specially keyword difficulty. I have a lot of experience with directories, and I can affirm they have given me excelent results.

Well, I can tell you that Wordtracker is a must for keyword analysis. It's not free, but it is worth the money.

Just for general information, you can focus on two types of keywords (on my modest opinion and according to my experience, of course):
    - A short list of hard keywords that will bring you lots of visits if you happn to get them to top 10 in the rankings
    - Targetting a list of 50-100 related keywords (which is called the "long tail" I believe - sorry, english is not my native language), which are keywords that are easy to get into top rankings and bring you all together many visitors. I have experienced this with my blog (in spanish) ilmaistro.com. Amazon has been doing this for a while.

There are lots of things to consider when choosing your keywords, it depends on the way you face the problem I believe, and the resources and budget you have available. Hope this helps. :)

if free directories still count as backlinks then why I can't see any of their backlinks in google webmaster tools and yahoo links? Still doubted them though...I didn't get the better SERP from directories. my ranks increased when I got another backlinks, which definitely not from directories.

I think I'll stop promoting websites via directories, I can't see the backlinks. Especially in google. Better do any other jobs such as article marketing, much more useful.

For sure, get any sites listed in 2000 directories will help..........
I think 2 millions directories is even better......... of cause...............

but the question is: does that worth to spend the time on submitting your site to directories?????????? Or any robot software can do that (free?) ?

    Thanks.

Free directories are more important than paid ones. Except for a few really top paid directories like Yahoo, I think Google does not value them too much. But who am I to know? It is just a guess based on the fact that Google does not like paid links.

if it is help us, then why I can't see any backlinks in google.com/webmasters and also other backlink checker tools. I have seen several links from those directories but most of them aren't listed there. I think google realize about this and they knew all of us is trying to get more backlinks in free directories and sadly, new directories is keep coming every day, so maybe they won't count backlinks from directories anymore. I checked my website, it has been approved in many free directories but when I checked my backlinks with several tools, I can't found my backlinks there.

I have found my backlinks in forum (digitalpoint) but I can't found from directories.

I don't see the point in worrying about back links. I think it's pointless. I just worry about getting the traffic. If you get the traffic and have good content, the backlinks will then follow. So why focus on backlinks and have no traffic while you could actually be focusing on just the traffic and having all the backlinks following. You get 2 for the price of one here.
