This is a very touchy topic, I don't think that there's any real answer to it...but you can try and see what happens :)

I think it's not illegal if you mention the source of information.

Well I dont think it is mandatory to mention the source... And you are just asking the same questions in your or other forum...

Of course, if you quote the source then it would be understood that the words are not yours thus it would be absolutely ok to copy and paste from forums.

of course it is normal for people to share the same interests and ideas but it would be kinda fishy if the wording is exactly the same to the word, right!

I think if you follow the copyright policies on the site, and you use proper formatting for citing your references - MLA, APA, Ect... you should be okay.

Good luck to you and your endeavors.

I have aquestion for the original poster.

What would be the reason you'd want to copy other peoples thoughts from their posts?

Can you give me an example?

Are you talking about taking their thoughts and putting them in an article that you write yourself?

    Sorry just need some clarification!

    Thanks,

You definitely risk legal problems. On sites where the forum owns the copyright of everything posted, you'd be violating their copyright. On sites where the posters retain their copyright, you'd be violating their rights (and the forum itself has no legal grounds to give you permission to repost it). Don't steal other people's work. Quoting a small bit and citing the source is fine. Copying is not.

It's perfectly fine to quote a piece of a post (or whole thing possibly if it's just 1-2 sentences) in the context of a story.

After you've researched the copyright info for the forum, go read up on Fair Use (since 90% of people have it wrong).

Don't just look at the Copyright Act, because it's lacking. Read up on it from a law review article or check out some cases to get a feel for what is and isn't fair use.

I also interested in this subject, because I've heard that Google system will "punish" those who copy the content. In other words, such sites will not be indexed.

But at the same time, I've already read four articles with the same content. How is it possible?

First of all, it's NOT legal even if you cite the source - that only applies to academic writing, not commercial ventures.

It's not legal, it's plagiarism, these words are mine and copyrighted to me the moment they appear on this page. I choose to put them on this website, and I don't give permission for them to be copied without my knowledge to others. You run a fine line.

    What do you mean format?

I don't know how DP got its look. I know most forums look the same because they come from teh same script/software, where the rights are purchased from the company.

But copying our content - what you and me write - is plagiarism.

As long as you don't steal another forum's design, content, logo, etc. you're fine. You need to do it entirely on your own, using materials that you have the right to use (like forum software that you license) to not risk violating someone's intellectual property rights.
