Good to see people writing to a "novice" audience. Sometimes we forget how little others know about our industry.

yeah, meethere has a good point.

Newbies often don't understand what deep links are. Another thing would be to check the PR/age of directory/domain. That prevents them wasting time on a crappy QBC directory.

Have added the deeplink detail, thanks MeetHere

I have not mentioned that as i am basically teaching them to use free web directories as a mean for promotion and well what you suggested can be a very tedious process, i will definietly mention that once i start promoting paid directories

Wikipedia: There are many web directories which offer free inclusion, wherein, one can submit their site, and have editors review these submissions for possible inclusion in their directory index.

    Kivivniar: I would disagree

Why do you disagree with the comment from Wikipedia?

Great Article Kiviniar... and i second your argument... yes there are some free directories giving high quality backlinks and that help in boosting the SERP's as well as PR.

The problem with SEO consultants is that they degrade the power of free web directories just becaus they have clients with big budgets..

Yes a paid directory listing may hold SERP value but submissions to free web directories can be cost affective and compliment the overall PR campaign

Free web directories still get featured links submitted for $10 or so.
