Still this is only business. And more - we can say: it's a show-business. Even big Google understandand it well, running more and more of pop stupid services. We can like it or no, but this is the poem wrapping the world around today You wrote: webmasters will buy the script or mod It's not like that. I believe webmasters, websites owners will buy listings if they like design, presentation. It's all because 90% of webmasters we shouldn't call webmasters. Also you shouldn't think the way I do all my scripts or mods just for design or make sites look cool. Most of it is preety useful or profitable and that was the reason to create it.
Well I was speaking more in terms of what the thread was created for. That is David wanting to make a good detailed listings page for his script. But yes the more fancy it is the more likely people will add listings.
I totally agree that the presentation can have an affect on sales. I have had experience with this on shopping sites where we improved the design. Just to clarify an earlier point: 1. On some directories detail pages have some good pagerank. For one of my sites there is a directory detail page that outranks the site itself. 2. There are many cases of directories with low pagerank or no pagerank detail pages. This is more often the case. 3. I'm not aware of a single directory with more than 1000 links that has many detail pages that are pagerank 5 or higher. Not to say that one doesn't exist, but this would be an exception, not a rule. As Dargre pointed out, the presentation of the detail page can be an attractive selling point, and also provides some additional reason to buy a link, but for me, when it comes to pagerank, I would be more likely to consider the category page. One feature that I don't think has been mentioned was the mod for Other Listings by this Author. This can be good because if someone surfs to the detail page, they may be likely to find other listings too, and it can increase traffic for the buyer.
Finally, post #43 and we finally hear about a mod - knew there was a point in here somewhere. Sheesh, why not simply start with that; there's a new cool mod and asking what folks think of it?
Rofl, that tickled me. @David, the idea that gimmicks affect sales are what's destroying directories, REAL e-retailers don't give a stuff about pagerank and alexa and all them gimmicks, they want a straightforward no nonsense link that gets converted, get back to basics, give the customer what THEY want not what YOU THINK they want and what might make your script look pretty. Do you see google or any of the searches with this crap, do you see any REAL directory with these puffed up features, Yell.com, business.com, White Pages and so on, the answer is an simple NO. Yes, these features can sure affect sales.... negatively.
That is not the reason. The reason is because an0n displays the new featured lisings on the homepage and therefore whatever detail page is shown durning the pr snapshot will most likely get pr -1 from the homepage. The same will go for the Last Browsed Categories.
That's good feedback. I'm sure there is some truth to this. Sometimes people get so caught up in mods that they fail to see the most important selling points for their customers. On the other hand, people have to try things to see what works, and some things do end up working quite well. You have to also be careful putting up a directory that is just like all the others. It can be helpful to do something that is innovative. So really, there are valid points on both sides of the issue, and this is why having a discussion like this is worthwhile.
The regular category pages are same as Dmoz/yahoo with only link and information about the site. Details page are in addition to that (they were not there before v3.06 or so and still directory existed ) They are just an improvement to a listing with lot more information.. Yes details page is mainly for webmasters for better SEO results.
I tell things how it is. Sometimes I agree, sometimes I dont. I don't play footsie with anyone. p0w! is much more 'fun'. Sorry banless, you are wrong. theory busted: NOT Featured listings and on PAGE 4 PR6 http://www.directorydump.com/mainsearches-link-583.html PR5 http://www.directorydump.com/central-directory-link-595.html and a whole bunch of PR4's; page 5
Trust me, this theroy is true. It is impossible for a page to have that sort of page rank from a pr0 category page.
That's ok, i trust myself and what i do, and i just provided PROOF, of pages that never hit the front of dump and are on pages beyond the 1st. Dunno why you are having a hard time seeing this, but hey... to each his own.
I wonder how this can be the case, my directory www.mainsearches.com is pr4 This Detail page is pr 5 Here. It’s not the only one. Thanks Brian
What makes you think its impossible? This anon guy seems to know it all or he comes across that way, are you saying that if it is impossible then somehow he is showing fake PR? I'm not taking sides here, if I was it would be yours as it seems more logical but I don't for one second think anon would do anything wrong to get PR like this?
My bad, did'nt see the not featured part. So this thread does not get off topic I'll start a new thread here in a little to give my theroy on why some pages have higher pr then others, even the homepage.
ah its ok. we all have a misread every once in a while. i can tell you that google is one hell of a mystery too. I've definitely been thrown for a loop or two or ten over the past year trying to analyze all of this info and research I've done. I do have a mod though set up of a couple of directories to see if it also plugs into things in the long run. Two versions of it. Will be nice to see which offers the most incentive. /me crosses fingers Oh, and as far as pheonix goes, i just tend to ignore the instigation and blah blah blah coming from her, i advise others to do the same.
Wasn't instigating anything here anon, just wanted to make that clear. I was hoping a good educated explanation was going to come from you, guess not, never mind.
