So what if a category page outranks a details page.

The category page will have at least 9-19 other outgoing links besides whatever footer/sitewides there are. On the details page the PR passed is only shared with the site represented by the details page and the footer/sitewides. Even if the details page is 1 or 2 PR ratings lower than the category page, the passed juice is probably the same if not more.

That can depend a lot. There are a lot of detail pages with a pagerank or zero, or not even indexed. This applies to a very large percentage of detail pages, in which case the category page would be much more important.

I'm a bit confused here David, you start a thread asking about what should be on a details page and it seems now you've done a 180 and said they aren't all that important as compared to category pages. That may be the case, but I see details pages as a bonus to submittors as well as some additional indexable pages for the directory owner.

There are some here who have used the details pages to include reviews and other extra real content (not fuzzy math statistical charts from Alexa and the like) that provide a great extra value to the sites in their directory.

Mainly deep links, PR, and, of course, traffic is always excellent.

i don't think statistics make it any better for the submitter, since some may have a new website or whatnot. PR, recent cache date and <h1> tag wrapped around the title of submitter's website, is what makes a good detail page.

What is it with you and duval? you playing games with each other, or in love with each other, coz one minute you make out your at each others throats, the next your coo-ing each other. Cut it out, we need 'REAL' love in this place. :D

Can't wait to see your mod anon looking forward to seeing what uniqueness it brings to the directory world. :) and whats this 'pOw' lark, my kid bro makes that noise running around in his superman outfit. It would make you look a lot more adult simply saying, 'I think I made my point'. :)

    dvduval you're always on time.
I have some additional info on my details pages like LinkPopularity (so many have it from me :)), ane have even more like Alexa rank, domain age, Technorati links, Dmoz listed...
Have popular links from category, deep links, tagclouds etc....

    Example: http://www.linkforever.net/info/audiotopnetcom.html
    or:

But I decided it's not enough. So I'm working now on something more - very attractive but also preety useful for visitors and link owners. Something that nobody seen before. I'm gonna use some power of my multimedia programming skills for that.

All just to show that directory is not necessary only links, links, links...
Also to show so much can be done with your PHPLinkDirectory.

Am I the only wierd one here?

You dont need domain stats, pagerank, backlinks, indexed pages, alexa, or none of that crap.

To me when I see all that junk that means the directory is being made for webmasters to submit their sites and not for anything else.

A clean detailed page that is for VISITORS and USERS would be something along the lines of Yahoo Directory and DMOZ. Ya your right, they dont have one because it isnt needed.

So my opinion is either dont have one or just have a big text box for a full length description with as many characters as they can type about their site.

Here's a thought: if you made the details page optional, how many takers would there be?

I think a lot of the details pages are too sparse in terms of information, and they simply contain details that could have been integrated into the main category pages, or they contain irrelevancies like Alexa stats and PR. Only webmasters care about that stuff. If you're going to have a details page, fill it with information that's relevant to your directory: opening times, phone numbers and addresses, company vat numbers, etc. For many directories, a lot of this stuff won't apply.

This is your opinion. Another opinion is that directories can be for people.
Why don't we have only rich, smart ladies in TV shows?
Just only stupid empty blondes... However preety nice most of them. :D
No difference if they have nothing new or wise to say...
People want them, people pay to see them, people want to be like them...

If I understand your poem then I agree.

The reason to have them is to make it look cool and webmasters will buy the script or mod. Thats it.

Really doesnt offer anything for visitors though. Most REAL visitors probably only click on the detail link page 6.2% of the time anyways.
