Watch out when you say "accept non profit free" lots of "non profit" are just lobby groups and they have more money than your avg sumbitter. Make sure they are a CHARITY. Charities are also non profit but there is a huge difference.
All this checking is extra work, plus reviewing the site. They should have to pay the review fee. Do they get free listings in phone books, television, radio? Why would we be expected to give them free advertising online? That said, there is nothing stopping us from voluntarily adding charities that we are particularly fond of... without a submission.
Good point. There are specific rules in the UK as to what sort of organisations can qualify for charitable status. It has to demonstrate some benefit to people, so lobbying groups for animal rights issues, for instance, don't qualify. If you look closely, you will find there are actually vast numbers of charities, many with websites. Listing them all would take a lot of time, so if you say you'll list them all free you open yourself up to a lot of potential voluntary work. At some point you've got to draw a line.
At first when you said animal issues I was like no, animals need our help so lets give them free. Than I remebered... Here in Canada there is a big group called "Ducks Unlimited". They lobby to ensure enough wetlands for ducks. Sound like a bunch of great guys!!? Well.... It's funded by hunting groups. the reason they need to preserve duck wetland is so they can have a place to hunt. That's the truth!
I think it depends on the nature of the charity... What if you are being charitable to people but your site isn't necessarily a charity? I was approached to include http://www.restoringneworleans.com/ on my site and was even offered money to do so. However, after seeing what the site was about - in terms of rebuilding New Orleans - I chose not to accept the offered money and instead ran the ad for free. It has been running ever since Hurricane Katrina hit, and I have no plans to remove it anytime soon. In that sort of instance, as a directory owner, it's probably good karma to include links like that for free
I agree, its a nice thing to do and basically its up to the directory owner, someone could feel strongly about a particular charity too and want to support it, for various reasons. I will take this all into account when dealing with charities in the future.
Yes I do charge for listing charity sites. Whenever I find one myself and it is nice one then I list it myself
hmm, well i own a bidding directory. i would let them have a free listing at the minimum bid. so if they wanted more exposure they would have to pay....
