Cricinfo.com, the world's most popular sports website has been bought by ESPN, an American company. http://soccernet.espn.go.com/feature?id=437905&cc=5739
Don't be too surprised. Allen Stanford, the Texan multi-billionaire has recently invested 10's of millions in Caribbean cricket,a tournament invloving 19 Caribbean countries.. I think he will be the most influential man in cricket over the next 10-20 years, just like Kerry Packer was in the 70's and 80's. I am sure he will start his own international 20-20 tournamnet.
Well this is also because of ESPN lunched Star cricket along with Asian channel Star Sports in India and this channel would be started in next few days and before 23th june. Cricket is biggest sports in Asia and this would be easy to promote Cricket for ESPN.
A 20-20 international tournament would definitely spark a lot of interest smaller countries. 20-20 is more interesting and entertaining for the fans and will definitely grow the support base of cricket.
20-20 tournaments are popular. However, the one problem you get with Cricket is that it is so boring and is a very slow sport. There needs to be an improvement on the speed of the game, as opposed to soccer.
I have to agree with you. Places like Pakistan, India and Sri Lanka - Cricket is their religion. Also for marketing purposes they have young players promoting their products and services.
ESPN has interests in the cricketing subcontinent as well, and although cricket may not be big in the States, there are quite a few Asians who use Cricinfo to keep track of their favourite teams. Great decision to buy imo..............
yeah, i'm suprised ESPN bought out cricinfo. I'm American (and Indian) and the only source for anything cricket related was on cricinfo. I stayed up from 3am - 10am reading the live feeds. lol, now of course there is the dish. anyone see me at the bermuda game?
i think that' the only Bermuda game. There were about 12 people watching... it was wonderful. I was also there last year when Dravid got his 105... twas my birthday that day.
IMO its a cracking decision, really good acquisition. It enhances the ESPN portfolio. They had soccernet to cater to soccer needs, now a portal dedicated to cricket ! Kudos !
