How many free web directory submissions do you recommend?

    Hi all,

I'm a little confused and would appreciate some collective feedback.

I work with a couple of SEO guys who have different views on the number of free web directory submissions that should be conducted to kick off an SEO plan.

One says 50 max to start then slowly build from there month on month (5-10 new submissions p/month)

The other says 1-200 p/month for the first few months until you achieve reasonable SERPs, then do less (5-10 p/month) to maintain and strengthen rankings.

Would welcome your thoughts on the matter, are both safe/acceptable for the SEs? What is most effective?

    Thanks

I'd go with the first. Free directory submissions should not be the basis of your SEO campaign.

I started 2 sites at the same time one I've been optimising the other I did directory submissions. The first has about 25,000 hits a day the latter less than 1000 a day. I would recommend SEO any day over directory submissions. Not that they shouldn't be used, but I would focus on getting your code right first. I'm using IBP to monitor the site optimisation which is working well and helps me correct my mistakes by highlighting the SE view rather than just what I can see.

Is there any sense to add new website in PR0 directories? And will my site enter in sandbox if I submit it to 600+ directories?

I would choose the first one , going too fast can trigger the alarms and get you sandboxed.

I wanted to emphasize this point.

I get like 4-6 emails a week that i been added to directories. You don't automatically get in so it should not be a big factor.

I think a dozen quality directories a month is plenty.

if you submit 100 free directories in a day, dose not mean that you get all 100 listed, and it takes time for the reviews!! so i would suggest you to submit as many as you can!!
    cheers!:D

Do as many directory submissions as you can. Get as many links as you can.
Don't listen to people who say that you have to limit yourself to a certain number per day or month.
Getting as many links as you can, as fast as you can will not result in a sudden jump in SERPs but it will help you in the long run.

ablaye I am also thinking like you, there is no daily limit.

One time I have submitted my dir to 1000 directories in one day and I do not mark any negative things.

I believe so as well, but showing up in 400-500 directories in one month will def. hurt you in the SERPS I believe.

I believe the time spent submitting to that many directories can be better spent on othe SEO techniques that would be more rewarding.

I have read on some forums and seo blogs that submitting to lots of directories in a short period of time could hurt your SERPS. Even if could look reasonable, this can only be certified by testing. I strongly believe that, for example, submission to 1000 directories in one day won't be a problem, because:
    - in the first place google won't crawl those sites in the same day.
    - you won't be accepted to all of them in the same day.
    - they are all different sites on different ip's and different PR

There a lot of people which are aware of the existing SEO techniques, but this techniques are of no use if you don't have good content and a lot of backlinks. Ultimately the user decides if you should/shouldn't have a good PR, but submitting to lots of directories will help the user find you easier.
