A possible feature of QBC - Directory's PR dropped 2 or 3 points on next update

QBC could buy only a few month high PR7+ backlinks at the beginning. When their directories hits PR5+, then they start selling links, especially long term sitewide links claiming their directories are strong. But their PR would drop 2-3 points or even worse on next update.

    Do you agree?

Its possible but there would have to be other 'QBC indicators' taken into account too.

Sometimes Google works in mysterious ways and pagerank might go down even though the directory has built up more quality backlinks.

Actually I did that once with my directory (which I neglected after a few months). I really wasn't looking to be a QBC but now it seems I was once a part of the QBC. :(

I got a pr5 on the next update that lasted for 3 updates but I neglected it after that.. :(

I think OP is right, that may happen to alot of DIR's. You need a real game plan if your shelling out 1-500 or more a month on links. A few months of no real returns easy to abandon. Personally I buy 0 links for my site so it doesn't really affect me but I do see TONES of people spending extraordinary amounts on links around here. It's different if your a big dog / w/ big pockets but if not very easy to loose your shirt trying to enter this hyper competitive market.

Even 4 months of a good pr7 link would cost at least a few hundred bucks and you might grab a pr5 off of that. If that directory has a custom template, a few nice mods then I would say they don't fall into the QBC category. Total outlay would be around $800 or so for the above. Really it is hard to know someones true long-term intentions, plus situations change.

QBC like to spend $30 on dropped domain + $0 on free script + $0 on free template (probably remove link backs), announce on DP for free submissions to build up traffic and Alexa then then re-sell directory for $400-$1,500. There is a guy, leet on his second one of these this week. http://www.sitepoint.com/marketplace/auction/9290

Well when you buy links dont you check backlinks in Yahoo? If a person only has 3 or 4 PR7 links and not much of anything else then there is no reason to think they are actually promoting. I would pass on submitting and save myself the trouble...

"I would always check a website's back links or PR at www.checkpagerank.net!" - I would not put much faith in that website, check-out what they are saying at the bottom:

ESTABLISHED TRAFFIC DOMAINS!One of the easiest and fastest ways to start your online business is not thinking and creating websites with new domain names but picking up older pageranked domain names that have already been spidered and indexed in the search engines for months and years... just waiting for you to pick up and start making money! More info...

This is exactly the kind of thing QBC's (and scammers) do.

I just think any site that is promoting dropped domains as a way to get a hand-up on the competition is not entirely on the up-and-up, that's all. It seems nowadays dropped domains are used by scammers to bilk advertisers and flip worthless sites.

Buying a dropped domain because you like/want the name is one thing...and that is of course fine. But buying it because it shows a high page rank on the toolbar and using that page rank to trick folks into buying links and advertisments is fraud.
