Since the big G is against purchasing links, isn't TLA a big target to have sites be reported?

Buying and selling text links is a legitimate form of advertising that predates Google. Maybe they want everyone to spend their money on Adwords instead. I

I don't think they will be of much success with it. A handmade TLA looks nothing but a regular link unless you put "buy SEO-friendly link here" or "Links for sale" just under a block of links and get reported to Google;)

I think Google has been able to detect TLA for some time now. It screams paid for when people have things like this in their code:

    <!-----Begin Text-Link-Ads-----!> <div class="TLA">

Webmasters that put expiration dates in footer notes are pretty obvious too.

<!---Ends 12/14/2007---!> Googlebot finds the new link on 6/14/2007 and sees a date for 6 months later. Hmmm.. guess that person purchased a link for 6 months.

Yes, this may be an option to distinct a paid links block, they can even have some techs spy on the biggest textlink byu-sell systems and find tokens in HTML(like you said) that will clearly state that the link is sold.
Besides some of them give a full list of participating websites which is not good at all.
I would hate my site appear in the list.

    Why not?
If a webmaster spends $5000 on links in vain he will be discouraged to do it again and tell the others that textlinks do not work.

Yes TLA will get killed by Google in near future. May be TLA people are also working on this issue. I think at some point Google will feel helpless because webmasters are always one step ahead of Google. Every time webmasters finds out the way to rank well on Google.

Google can already detect a lot of sites that are selling links. Any site with a bunch of external links in the sidebar or footer probably has had their ability to pass PR reduced.

You just need to buy links on sites that don't sell many, or buy links for the traffic.

At least for today it looks like google knocked them down in the serps. 40+ for the phrase text link ads and all other phrases related to buying links.

But so many sites have gotten penalties lately who knows what this possible penalty is related to.
