What exactly is a Directories and does it help?

Hi, I run a myspace resource website and I’m looking to advertise it and make it pretty big.

I am currently trying to exchange links with many websites but I just learned a bit about directories. So are directories basically a website which has bunch of links to different websites?

I found this website http://www.directorycritic.com/free-directory-list.html it has about 1000+ free directories which they claim to be "search engine friendly". So if I submit to these directories will my page rank improve @ all? Will I get more traffic. What exactly will it do for me?

Not clear if you want to increase you Page Rank or SERPs. Of course directories submissioins is vital to achieve both the targets.

 

Its ok to submit your website to those directories who are good enough to give you some hits either daily or with short gap. But I want to tell you one thing on basis of my experience that you will not get hits by submitting your site to directories especially free directories. Yes many are SEO friendly and even have high PR but they are not well enough to send you hits.
If you submit your site to 100 directories only 2 or 3 will return you 1 or 2 hits daily.
so you can imagine it is one of the poor things one do with his website.
Also link exchange is good but it do not effect your site PR at all.
Try to submit your site to sites that provide one way links. You can find list of about 400 free directories at http://onewayseolinks.com/
Also consider link exchange with my site.Link exchange with one or two sites is effective but not with lots of sites

 

Try submitting to quality strong Paid directories..

It will improve your SERPs, SEO and PR..
Directories dont give much traffic.

 

Directory help your site to gain more back links and to improve your rankings search engine result page.

 

Your page rank will improve but not your traffic!


If you are looking for both traffic and PR

buy sitewide links at other myspace resources site which will be more beneficial to you!

 

Do you actually think you will get much traffic from bigweblinks?
Just an asumption but I would guess the alexa is very low because submitters go there every day to see what spot they are in now.
As stated above... directories dont give you much traffic...
