Get Dreamweaver and start playing around with it. You can view the code or split the screen and you'll slowly catch on to what's going on once you make a few sites or take a look at some. I'd recommend a book like http://www.amazon.com/Perspectives-...9760719?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1181935056&sr=1-1 ...I learned from the old version dreamweaver mx 2004 which is probably cheaper or you could find a used one and you'll get the hang of things.

This is what I recommend too, atleast if you want to learn coding, learn it from the masters who validate HTML ;) Their tutorials are pretty comprehendable too!

As m0rtal mentioned using dreamweaver or any WYSIWYG editor at the start can be really helpful. You can design some pages with tables or anything you want then you can go right to the code view and see what's required to do it. Some solid guides are always very helpful for explaining what some of the tags do but playing around in a visual editor I think is the best way to learn HTML.

I remember visiting http://www.lissaexplains.com regularly years ago before I started using Dreamweaver and Frontpage.

For beginners it is highly recommended.
