Is the digital community going downhill because of teenagers with laptops?

Discussion in 'Hardware' started by mcfox, Jun 15, 2007.

Is the quality of the digital community (digital in general, not as in DP) going downhill in a big, big way because every teenager on the planet now has a laptop or what?

What's happening to the internet? It used to be a place where people, who were at least a bit specialised in that they required some knowledge to actually operate a computer, hung out and shared knowledge and ideas - now it seems like a flood of illiterate morons has washed over the dam that used to keep them out, deluging the entire internet.

It's not the teenagers...it's society in general.

Well, these days every one is exposed to the digital world very easily. But its up to the person who will really benefit who takes the right action and make better use of it.

Teenagers may be with their laptops all the time but how long and to what extent?

Yep. The more morons (including teenagers) buying Dells and 'learning the internet', the more money we can make from them.

You're missing a key business aspect here, boss. The more "dumbass" people you get online, the more money you can make.

In all honesty, I have noticed that younger kids aren't the ones making DP less prestigious. It is the people who don't speak good english, and refuse to do learn anything substantial after being corrected.

I have always been literate and articulate, even when younger.

And, the more "dumbass" people online who try to start a business and are incompetent or scamming others....or just flooding the business market....really does not help us at all. And, if you are looking to make money from the new "dumbasses" you probably already fit into the category of incompetent or scammer.

I think that's a bit harsh. Think of your local supermarket - they target the average brain dead moron. And all those stupid shops in the mall you don't go into... who's keeping them in business. Dumbasses.

But we are not talking about the supermarket or the shops in the mall...and you can always find exceptions to the rule.

If people are dumb enough to get burnt by the crap that's sold on TV and in hyped up retail stores, they're dumb enough to get ripped by every online scam there is. Anyone who can take advantage of them should.

Thanks for the stereotype. It's people like you that force others to not take teenagers seriously.

No, it's not teenagers. Sure, a lot of teenagers don't have much brains, and still post, but don't categorize a whole age group because you saw two or three poor posts.

It's people in general. They hear about making a million on the internet, buy a laptop/pc with their last money, and fire "how do u mke moniz on teh interweb?" at you. You assume it's a teenager. It could be, just as much, an illiterate 30 year old.

Yeah, most of the teenagers on DP are well above average. But I do think the general "online community" is dumbing down rapidly.

What part of (digital in general, not as in DP) do you guys not understand? At least us 30+ people can slow down enough to read the whole post :)

Because people are vulnerable and can be taken advantage of, means it is OK to take advantage of them? That's certainly is what you are suggesting by your post.

Whatever happened to truth in advertising. :)

I'm all for keeping everything legit. But if people can't read... what more can we do? :D

I know it sounds kinda nasty, but I've really got no sympathy for people who get sucked in by ridiculous online/offline scams.

Having no sympathy for them is one thing...

But to say that those people should be taken advantage of is an entirely different kettle of fish!

Wow, I think blaming teenagers is creating too much of a stereotype. As Jim said, it is society in general. This is not just an Internet problem, it is a problem everywhere in our world. I am 40 and i have to say, I have had less problems out of the teenagers than those who are older. The teenagers know a lot more about web development than most of us older people and I find it a great benefit to have them as part of the overall community.

Are there dumb ass teenagers? Yes and there are just as many dumb ass adults who passed their morals and attitudes down to their kids.

Certainly not take advantage of them.....

    I was thinking between posts....

The difference between a supermarket or shop in the mall is they are "established businesses" with a "real face"...and most times if they try to scam or take advantage, there are recourses one can take.

The www is the great maker of anonimity and greed. If you have been online for a number of years...as a marketer.....you have seen it get worse and worse. Anybody who can get near a computer thinks they can make money online and that is not the truth. It takes a lot to make money online....intelligence, knowledge, instinct and money to name a few. Now, there are a lot of people lacking 1, 2, 3 or all 4 of these, so they do it behind "no name/no face", say/sell anything they want, and take advantage of people with little or no recourse. The www marketing world is a swamp and a sewer for the most part....or maybe I am just jaded at this point because I HAVE been around for a while.
