This is my last thread on this issue as I’ve nothing more to add to this topic: So let me summarize what this topic was all about. A question was posted onto whether the earth is flat in the Quran? This question was supported with information from Dr Zakir Naik, that claims that the Quran was well ahead of its time to declare that earth is of a spherical shape and not flat as it was widely believed at the time. By that assertion he was presenting the doubters with a solid proof that the Quran is the words of god. Zakir based his claim on this verse from the Quran 79:30 where he interpreted it as follow: "And we have made the earth egg shaped". The word egg-shaped is the miraculous word. In my rebuttal to his claim, I’ve shown that the word “Dahaha دَØَاهَا†in the verse in its original Arabic language does not mean egg-shaped. As it was well described by almost all of the past commentators and highly respected Islamic scholars for the last 1400 years to mean just spread/extend. Almost all of the reputable translators/interpreters of the Quran agree with the prominent scholars of the past on the meaning of that word dahaha. Which doesn’t translate into an egg shaped earth. Not even the official English translation of the Quran by the Saudi Ministry of Islamic Affairs, Endowments, Da‘wah and Guidance, accepts Zakir interpretation. The verse has been interpreted by the Saudi ministry as follow: [79:30] And the earth, moreover, hath He extended (to a wide expanse); http://quran.al-islam.com/Targama/dispTargam.asp?l=arb&t=eng&nType=1&nSora=79&nAya=30 The best English translators of the quran used also the correct version. Arabic 79:30 وَالْأَرْضَ بَعْدَ Ø°ÙŽÙ„ÙÙƒÙŽ دَØَاهَا Shakir 79:30 And the earth, He expanded it after that. yusufali 79:30 And the earth, moreover, hath He extended (to a wide expanse); Pickthal 79:30 And after that He spread the earth, Al-Hilali 79:30 And after that He spread the earth; Additionally Even if we accept his egg-shaped earth interpretation for the Arabic word Dahaha which according to him specifically refers to the egg of an ostrich. That description is also inaccurate as scientists say that the best miniature object to represent earth is a pumpkin, quoting them: “It's not egg-shaped, either, it's shaped more like a pumpkin.†Finally I demonstrated that the very same word that all of this discussion is about was found in pre-Islamic poetry and in the same context of god’s earth creation. I’ve listed examples of two Arabic poems. There are only few individuals that supports Zaik’s interpretation and I find it hard to comprehend how one could refuse all of the presented evidence at their hand and accept the version of few people. I guess Zakir who is probably just mimicking the work of the real man behind most of the scientific miracle fables in the Quran, Dr zaghloul al najjar, wasn’t trying to prove the miracle of the globe earth but rather denying the error of the flat earth in the Quran.
(sorry for my english )well gusy very quick answer, first in Quran there is no where earth is round or flat, yes there is that it all was togather then we seperate it, (modren since disvoer today that yes every thing was togahter) and about earth is round about 900 year old maps in Aferica showed even in those days Muslims knows earth is not flat and about 800 old maps in Pakistan show continant america (today every on say clumbos discover it)
What a stupid post. You Japanese had your country (industry) developed by the Americans after the war because they felt sorry for you. Just because the Quran describes the world as a wide expanse (of course it is). It covers many thousands of miles, it does not mean it is suggesting the world is flat. The meaning that could be garnered from it is, the world is not infinate which many people at the time thought it was. Of course, we know now the world is certainly not infinate.

The one thing I could never figure out about anyone thinking the earth was flat was (well two things), the sun and the moon. I mean seriously, when people looked up in the sky, if they assumed the earth was flat, wouldn't the moon and sun appear to be squares instead of circles? Seriously though, the Koran does refer to the earth as a carpet, bed and level: "Sura 51:48"And the Earth - we have stretched it out like a carpet; and how smoothly have we spread it forth." Sura 20:55 "He hath spread the Earth as a bed, and hath traced out paths for you therein, and hath sent down rain from Heaven, and by it we bring forth the kinds of various herbs..." Sura 67:15 "It is He who hath made the Earth level for you: traverse then its broad sides, and eat of what He hath provided. - Unto Him shall be the resurrection." Everything is open to interpretation these days.. So it is really anyones guess.

It all depends how you understand these verses. when you walk outside would you know that earth is not flat? And the verse which says we have spread it like a carpet has nothing to do with the earth being flat. it only refers to what you fond on earth ( mountains/vegetations and so on)
How I as an infidel "understand" them, or how an Islamist will 'teach" me? Sure. All one has to do is look at the horizon. I beg to differ.

look at the horizon? excuse me i live in a big town and if i did not know the earth was round i don't see how by looking at the horizzon would teach me that. and understand the verses not as an infidel or a muslim but just a person reading a book.
Curvature of the earth. The easiest way to see this is to watch ships at sea or on a lake, from the shore line. You can actually seen things disappear from view as they get farther away. It is not "distance" that makes them disappear, at least not initially. The disappear from sight as they make their way down the curvature of the earth. Objects in the distance tend to disappear "BELOW" the horizon as they get farther away.
I think the way they originally did it, was to put 2 large objects several miles away from each other and take measurements at exactly the same time. If the shadows are of different length, the sun hits them at different directions, thus there is a curve to the surface.
Its interesting you say this because there is a verse in the Koran which exactly says this so this is contradictory with the earth being flat. So I would just say that people are misunterpretating the verse which says that the earth is like a carpet.
Maybe it means that the earth is rolled up, like a carpet is for storage or when its on sale. Like a little debbie snack cake. The earth would look yummy that way.
