I thought it was sad no one had experience as the most important factor. After optimizing so many websites you develop a good feel for what is needed in any given situation.

Content is not aways a given... at least original content is not. I was amazed at all the sites I've seen working for directories that submit nearly blank pages, or pages with 'default' content (like the ABOUT page on Wordpress).

So when dealing with morons, I find it best to assume nothing is a given. (and I'm not calling you a moron ;) for you it was a given)

    1. Original content
    2. Good linking practices pointing to that content
    3. Navigation (including site map)
    4. Proper use of tags

On site SEO: TITLE IS THE MOST IMPOERTANT (if you have the right content of course)

Off-site: In-bounding links. (links that direct to your site).

Search Engine Friendly url's do not possess any uncanny powers, but they simply appear visually appealing on search engines.

Suppose there is a link with text "Software Development Texas"

    link1 : A normal link will look like "abc*com/php?4059438034938034

link 2 : whereas a search friendly url will look like abc*com/development_texas

Just observe the difference between two. Link 2 will reseult in higher CTR (Click Through Rate) on natural search since development and texas will appear in BOLD text.

Other than this search engines do not indulge in any sort of discrimination against non-search friendly urls.:(

Over the past year or so, search engines have started to take serious measures to combat spam against them. Search engine spamming usually occurs in one of three ways:

-Multiple submissions of your web pages (you d be surprised to learn that people still do this).
-Keyword spamming in low quality content.
-Link spamming (building tons of links to a new site REALLY quickly).

    Internal link,External link,Page rank,are also among them.

    Thanks....

    title yes
    what's an sef url?
meta tags aren't as important any more but they're still helpful
validation is good but not completely necessary. if there are only a few things wrong with the xhtml, then it's fine
I would definitely put "incorporation keywords into title, metas, content, internal links, and alt text on your list

    Besides what already put forward...

    1. Domain age. Buy a used domain that 5 years old or older.
    2. Mix up your anchor tags keywords to avoid looking spammy.
    3. Build unique content and on-topic backlinks daily.

    1) NO. Google totally ignores META tags <--- !

    My opinion:

    1) Inbound Links
    2) Relevant, often updated unique content
    3) Balance between "relevancy" for certain keywords and being careful NOT to appear "spammy". Just right in between.

This is really it guys. I would add maybe ensuring your back links have the correct anchor text. My swing trading site ranks on the first page of Google for 7 different keywords.

    Off page;
Incoming links with varied anchor text
    Social Bookmarking occurrences

    On-page;
    Title
    Headers
    content

-Meta tags are useless - You only need a meta description if your top of page content is the same on every page (internal links, etc.)
