It depends what your interests are. IF your looking to make a lot from adsense then you should pick a topic you have interest in, from there you can either have a website or a blog. Blogs are probably easier to implement adsense in, if your looking to make a website - simplicity is the key.

I think it does make a difference if you have a 'site' or a blog.. Usually, with a 'site', you will have more control over the structure and layout which if used properly can give you an SEO advantage over a blog. The real key is to have good, original content that people want to see - if you have that, combined with at least some basic SEO and creative marketing you can do good with either a 'site' or a blog.. Unless your a famous person, then a blog is all you need.. but if you're that famous, you probably dont need any extra money..
And it's the content that gets you visitors... thru search engines. Always write for humans but don't neglect the Google bot.
