To be honest the most important place to start is TARGETING

    Which terms you will target
Which pages on your site you will target.

The KW/Phrase research can make or break a SEO campaign. It is often overlooked ... but entirely essential.

As far as learning... here are some places to start

SEO Book by Aaron Wall; http://www.seobook.com/
    Mike Grehan SEO Book; http://www.search-engine-book.co.uk/
    Buyers Guide to SEO; http://www.sherpastore.com/Buyers-Guide-Search-Engine-Optimization.html
    Internet Marketing for Dummies; http://www.dummies.com/WileyCDA/DummiesTitle/productCd-0764507788.html
    The SEO Handbook - http://www.the-seo-handbook.com

    On the web;

    Search Engine Watch; http://www.searchenginewatch.com/
    Wikipedia on SEO; http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Category:Search_engine_optimization
    Reading from Phil Craven; http://www.webworkshop.net/search-engine-optimization-articles.html
    Mel’s Optimization Guide; http://search-engine-optimization.ecommercehosts.com/SEO-Guide/SEO_guide.htm
    SEOMOZ Beginners Guide; www.seomoz.org/articles/beginners-guide.doc
    Search Engine Roundtable; http://www.seroundtable.com/

Nothing specific really... just some good places to start. The rest is trial and error as always...

If you have a hunt around on this forum there are threads relating to Dos and Donts for newbies.

It's also important to think long term. If you are just starting out it's kind of like body-building: you might see leaps and bounds initially but then things level out. You need to do things little and often and most importantly, learn from your mistakes and the mistakes of others.

    Good luck chief!
