Yes you do have to install SP2. Microsoft now only supports Windows XP SP2.

SP2 is very good for security so I would be careful but SP2 isn't necessary.

Just the other day my Aunt needed to install a dick on her computer. She couldn't install it so I checked and she didn't have SP2 so I installed Sp2 for her and now her dick works.

I don't have SP2 installed and am doing just fine. Liek others have suggested I use Firefox (never liked IE) and I have TrendMicro anti-virus which seems to take care of any other issues. No firewall issues or other problems yet. It's all about vigilant.

How exactly do you install a dick on a computer?

To the OP - For me it would depend on the role the machine was going to play and the browsing habits of the users that will be using it. I don't think SP2 is as necessary as some do. I've got a win 3.1 machine attached to the internet as well as two win 95 machines. None of them experience problems. The only security measures in place on them is the firewall on my main machine which they use to connect to the internet.

That said if the machine in question is a p3 or better I'd go ahead and install sp2. Once it's installed go into the control panel, select Performance and Maintenance, then click on Adjust visual affects and select the radio button for best performance (I do this regardless of the system, even on my dual-core rig). That should solve most of your speed related issues and you have the added benefit of still running a "current" O/S.

I do the same, try to maximize the speed. That's one thing that I hate about Win though...they dumb everything down for user's 'protection' and then you have to spend 2.2 months working your way through annoying warning dialogues. are you sure you want to display both secure and non-secure items??? YES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I'd install it, but it doesn't matter if Microsoft "supports" it, because they charge a fee anyways for support, even if you just bought the software like a day ago. One time I bought Win XP and installed it on a computer I built, it fucked up the whole computer, and when I called Microsoft, they said that they wanted me to pay for support. I said hell no, and eventually fixed it myself. :)

Yes, you should. MS is a pain in the ass anyway, but this one is important, and a lot of stuff wont work without it.(SP2)

Install SP2..in fact I've slipstreamed SP2 into my plain old WinXP CD so that every time I reinstall, SP2 gets installed by default.

Also upgrade to IE7 if you use it...I prefer opera and FF ;)
